scary turk 8mm ammo

Poodleshooter was playing with my Yugo M48 and shooting the cheap turkish ammo that I had. He couldn't chamber one particular round and it turns out that there was a 1/2" crack running down the case mouth (apparently from a grossly unevenly applied crimp). The crack was wide enough so that you could see the base of the bullet and some of the powder. I was even able to pull the bullet out with my fingers.
Anyone else find one of these in their surplus ammo?
Guess I'm checking each round in the stripper clip before feeding from now on.

Those cracks are what is often called "seasoning cracks". They are the result of either or both of long term strain or improper brass annealing. The main danger is that chambering will force the bullet deep and raise pressures. Otherwise, they fire with no problem.

A bigger potential problem with some of that ammo is a hangfire, which is a delay in firing after the primer is struck. If a round does not fire, wait a while (I recommend 30 seconds) before extracting it. It would be no fun to have the round let go with the bolt unlocked or explode in the air in front of your face as it is ejected.

(Yes, I know some people don't believe in hangfires; some people don't believe in a round earth, either.)
