SC Car Carry

I am going to regularly traveling from GA to NC and passing through SC. I have a GA conceal carry permit but SC does not reciprocate with GA. I just read that SC permits the carrying of a loaded handgun in a closed glove compartment. I had always thought, any maybe I have been wrong all this time, that SC required you to keep the ammo in one part of the car and the unloaded gun in another. Did they just recently change this?

SLED, South Carolina AGs Office....

I would contact the SLED hq in Columbia South Carolina or maybe the AGs office.
Handgunlaw.us may help too.
To my knowledge, you need to keep the rounds & firearm apart.
The firearm needs to be in a secure case too. Not on your body or within reach.

Nope. There's no distinction between loaded and unloaded. All that matters is that it's in a glove box or console.

SECTION 16-23-20. Unlawful carrying of handgun; exceptions.

It is unlawful for anyone to carry about the person any handgun, whether concealed or not, except as follows, unless otherwise specifically prohibited by law:

(9) a person in a vehicle if the handgun is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle; however, this item is not violated if the glove compartment, console, or trunk is opened in the presence of a law enforcement officer for the sole purpose of retrieving a driver’s license, registration, or proof of insurance;

Greg, like Ga, S.C. is a no permit needed to conceal a loaded gun in the car, as in console or glove box. the car is considered an extension of the home.

Wow, I have been wrong all this time. In the past, right before I cross the state line into SC, I always stop and put the gun on the trunk and the ammo up front. Guess I've been going to a lot of trouble for nothing.

Greg, I don't know why S.C. acts so new yorkish about reciprocity especially with bordering states..... but yes, the car carry there is the same as it is in Ga.

Actually GA is the only border state that they seem to have a problem with. They reciprocate with NC, VA, AL, MS, TN, KY. They even reciprocate with a few northern states like IN, OH. I wish they would change that what did we ever do to them:cool:.

Any way, it's good to know that I can at least keep it loaded and in the glove box.

Next question

That brings me to the next question about car carry. Once I am in NC, since NC honors my GA/CCW, I assume that I don't have to worry about NC's car carry laws which are different from both SC and GA

I hate these kind of statements in laws. Does this mean a lock or simply a latch?

you should recheck the reciprocal states again. the list posted here is inaccurate. Al. and Ms. are shaded as such but they are not recognized by SC.
