SBR how much of a PITA is it?

I have always liked the looks of SBR's.
One I would seriously consider spending the money (gun and tax stamp) on is a Thompson. Although I like it with the 16" barrel I do not think it looks right (or as good as the shorter barrel).


I know very little about the NFA registration process.
Now here are my questions (referring to short barreled rifles only, not full auto):
1. What form would I need to fill out?
2. What else must be included with the form?
3. I live in Phoenix, AZ - will I need anything approved locally?
4. Does it make any difference if I have a concealed weapons permit?
5. The total registration process cost is $200 (exluding money order and mailing fees?)?
6. Is it easier to obtain approval for a SBR than a full auto?
7. What rights would I be giving up if any?
8. What is the typical turnaround time from mailing in request to approval?
9. Is the registration permanent considering I do not become a prohibited possessor?

Please tell me about anything I may have missed that I should know.

If you are buying a Thompson machinegun then it is just a MG, not an SBR.

If it is a semi-auto and you want it SBR, then you either need to buy one pre-registered and get it on a Form 1, or buy a 16"+ and then SBR it yourself with a Form 1.

If you buy it from a local dealer, you'll do a form 4 (in duplicate), two fingerprint cards, and one US Citizenship certification. If you make want to make it yourself, you'll need a form 1 (in duplicate), two fingerprint cards, and one US Citizenship certification.

See above. The form 1 or form 4 will also require passport size photos and the CLEO certification (part of the form where the Cheif Law Enforcement Officer in your jurisdiction signs to approve it). And don't forget the $200 check...

Yes, as mentioned above, the back side of the form will have a section for the CLEO (the sheriff, cheif of police, the DA, etc.) to sign to certify they have no reason to believe your possession of the weapon in question would be unlawful. This can be the sticking point since the CLEO is under no duty to sight the form. They have full discretion to refuse to sign; you can still get around it, but it gets more expensive and involved. That said, I think AZ is pretty good for signoffs.

No. The process is the same. The big difference is that pricetag for the full auto will have an extra zero or two, and you don't have the option of making your own full-auto.

Currently about a month.

Yes, but if you ever decide to sell it, you (well actually the buyer) have to go thruogh the same process with another set of forms and $200 tax.
 
SBR's in Texas

Would any of you know about getting an SBR in Texas(the DFW area)...how difficult would it be?
 
It's not a bad process at all. Sheriff Joe will do the CLEO signature for you... It takes about three weeks to go through his office.

If you are talking about a CLEO sign off and Irving is in Dallas County it will be a no go -- Tarrant - Im not sure. Might be possible if you go through the Sheriffs office. I've heard Denton Co. will sign. There's always the corp option -- and really it's not that hard of a thing to do.
 
In Tarrant, your good to go :) Sheriff Dee Anderson is pro gun and does ATF forms all the time...just a regular proceedure to to them. you just drop off your stuff to his secretary with a copy of your ID...and they mail it back to you when signed. And because they do them alot...they do the signature correctly/ ledgeable.
