Saw this sign in a gun shop. Would it upset you?

"I answer stupid questions. I am a gun dealer." I'm not going to mention the store, but it was in Ohio. I have never been in this store. Just thought I would check it out. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that sign. The sign wasn't in his backroom. It hanging right behind the counter. If he thought it was a joke, I wasn't laughing. Would you?

I would find that sign odd, but not upsetting.

BTW, shouldn't this thread be in the "General" area, since it doesn't relate directly to either handguns or pistolcraft?

WTF?!?! I can see how you'd take it the wrong way. I think it's in poor taste because it is easier to be taken the wrong way than the right way. If there is a right way.

IMHO, I think the *RIGHT WAY* to take this is: "No question is considered too stupid to ask when it comes to YOU learning to operate a firearm."

It could easily be taken to mean: "Gun owners/buyers ask stupid questions."

I'm hoping it doesn't mean the later, but I fear that's what most people think upon first reading it.

------------------
The first step is registration, the second step is confiscation, the final step is subjugation.

Maybe he was talking about his employees, you know, the idiots who will sell you .357 Magnum rounds for your .357 Sig pistol.

There are no stupid questions if asked in earnest. There are definitely stupid answers, just ask HCI, Brady, Klinton, etc.

Hmmm, the sign seems off-putting to me. Like: "Your questions are stupid." Or: "As a gun dealer, I'm superior to you and can't be bothered with your questions."

In contrast, the dealer in my area cheerfully responds to any and all questions. I don't know if he thinks any of the questions he gets are stupid. If he does, he keeps the thought to himself, as he should. Also, I think he's wise enough to understand that the inquirer won't know better until the question is raised and answered.

Would I be upset? No. But I certainly wouldn't go back to that shop, either. After all, I might ask a stupid question!

I took it as pointing out that many people don't know guns well, and that the dealer is willing to help them out. It's a variation on "there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers". The objective is to reassure the customer, so they won't hold questions back from fear of being thought "stupid".

It might have been phrased better, though.

Heard of that one before. Wouldnt upset me except if I knew I was asking stupid questions.
Hehe, the gun store I go to has that Interac calander/poster up. You know the one I am talking about.

It's probably just a play on the phrase all newbies use: "This may be a stupid question, but..." I wouldn't have it in my store... but it takes all sorts.

Wait, wait, WAIT! You all appearantly dont live in or near Ohio. I do and I will tell you I laugh my rear off when I read this. You are being way too serious, this is intended for all of those liberals who come into a gun shop (picture it like the church pastor sneaking into an adult book store)not wanting their friends to see them, and want to purchase a handgun (the root of all conservative evil) or worse. A FFL dealer friend of mine had a Buckeye come over here to WV and lean close and ask to buy a gun "that will really kill people." After the initial reaction my friend asked a few queations and found that the gun was truely ignorant of what guns are and did and set him on the path of responsible forearms training and ownership. The guy was a little disheartened to find out that he would have to make his purchase in Ohio or at least have it transferred there in front of his Ohio friends and neighbors. Remember that the majority of people are not gun owners especially in urban areas. Keep it simple and try to look on the lighter side.

Nope.

I've seen a lot dumber things go down in a gun shop before.

If I had my druthers, the shop where I work would have a sign that says "Asking a stupid question is easy. Admitting a stupid mistake is not."

Having heard plenty of bovine exhaust at gun shops and at the range, I wouldn't be offended by the guy's sign, but by his attitude. He may very well consider a question like "Is 124gr or 115gr better for 9mm?" to be unworthy of his time, in which case, I'd take my money somewhere else.

Did you get to know the guy at all?

If I saw that sign up in my local dealer, I would assume it meant that no question was too stupid to ask when it came to guns. That it's more stupid not to ask.

I've asked a lot of stupid questions in gunshops and hope to ask more.

Regards,

Ledbetter

I wouldnt get to offended....look at what we post on tfl. Then volunteer to work at the store a month....lol.....maybe then you might view that differently...lol....I use to get call's like.....
me---Hello, gun store, may I help you?
caller....do you sell guns?

or

me---Hello, Gun store, may I help you?
caller....Ive a gun Id like to sell and want to know what its worth.
me---I cant give you a good evaluation with out seeing the firearm, could you bring it in?
caller....cant you just tell me what its worth?
-.-.-.-.and so on it goes....

but sometimes people including store owners and workers are just arrogant, ignorant, etc.,...fubsy.

After hearing some of the questions they answer...no. The dealer I've been using has had a person how to go about getting a gun with a warrant out on you. The funny part is there was an off-duty cop in the store at the time.

Now that said, there are some true idiots out there selling guns. You know, the kind my 11 year old little brother can lecture on gun safety, and then go out and outshoot.

Guess I'm being way too sensitive. But when a salesman hangs a sign in his store that makes me feel uncormfortable about asking questions, I get offended. We've all asked "stupid" questions here on TFL. But has anyone ever replied: "Dude, that was a stupid question." Guess I can still remember buying my first gun. I asked the saleman to tell me the differences between a Glock 17 and a Ruger DC90. I'm expecting him to impress me with his knowlege of the weapons and their advantages over each other. But this is what I got: One's a 9mm and one's a 45. Then he looked at the other patron and rolled his eyes. I walked out.

I'd have a quiet chuckle and then ask "If you only answer stupid questions, where can I go to get answers to intelligent questions?" If they had something smart to say to that we'd get along fine. Eventually. John

Sounds like some people need some DE-sensitivity training, pronto. Sheesh, lighten the bleep up, y'all sound like liberal whiners.

"I find that sign offensive!"

"Huh? Ummmm, its a joke sir."

"You offend me!"

"Errrr, dude, its just a joke, you know, like when you finish a beer and throw the empty can at your friend? It aint meaning to do no harm, lighten up."

Im a stockbroker by trade, I answer a lot of questions that could be termed "stupid". However, I am in business to build relationships, like any business person. To ridicule the people you should be trying to help is a fast way to go under. It is my opinion that the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. Just think if the gun buying public never asked any questions of people who know guns. Dangerous indeed.
