saw an unusual slug? 8 gauge

I was at a friends house, he showed me a slug he found years ago, it actually protruded well over 1 inch past the end, it said 8 gauge. it was extremely heavy, & it looks like it could do some serious damage.

I had never seen anything like it, I should be able to get a photo in future if necessary, but I dont go to visit often as he lives probably 75 miles away. I probably wont be back until after Christmas.

every slug I have ever seen until last night was inside the shot gun shell, this was semi transparent & came past the end, & it looked like at least 1/2 of the slug was in the shell & the other half protruding.

any ideas what it was? anyone seen anything like it? were they made in other calibers?

Probably a 8 ga "Paradox" round .That would use a 1250 grain slug at 1500 fps !!! The Paradox gun had a barrel that had rifling for the last few inches. It could be used for shot or the special Paradox slug which was very potent on large game !!
 
8 gauge slug guns are used in industry for knocking off slag from blast furnaces, as I understand. The guns look like small artillery rather than shoulder arms.

Also, there were large bore rifles used for heavy game. This could be,as was said, a round for one of those.
