Saw a Colt 1911 for sale at LGS, thoughts?

I don't know much about 1911s besides that they're fun to shoot. My only experience with one is a Taurus PT1911 that I owned for a few months. My LGS has a used Colt 1911 (unfortunately that's all I know about it, I didn't take a very long look at it or ask many questions; I just dry fired it once) for $900. It was blued and looked very GI-like with the brown, diamond-style grips. It had standard 3 dot sights, which I don't believe are night sights. I know Colts retain their value very well, but would this be a decent price for a used Colt? I understand if there are several models out there and you can't give me much help since I haven't provided a whole lot of info, but I would appreciate anything you guys can offer.

Not nearly enough info. Is it a series 70 or 80 or 1991 or GI issue? Government, Commander, Officer's or Compact? Whats the condition? It's worth somewhere between $500 to $1,500.

I just re-read this and it sounds snarky. I really don't mean it that way but what you asking is akin to saying "I saw a Chevy at the dealer. What's it worth?"

You can get a NIB Colt Govt for $710 plus transfer.

So unless it was a 70 series Colt Repo or a Older Colt Govt I would say it is price way too high.

Good advise provided

mike,

Both burrhead and VWsig both provided sound advise.

If you are unsure what your looking at ask the LGS guy. Get specific details about the model. Perhaps grab the Serial Number. Pay close attention to details and of the condition. With any used firearm condition is key.

If you don't trust LGS guy and don't have someone you do trust that will be with you at point of sale then you should consider taking a pass. Beware of any "to good to be true deals". Usually LGS guys know their inventory and want to get best return on their investment. They do make deals but often it is with the people they have established relationships with that gets in on those.

Please don't misconstrue my comments to be negative about LGS, they are not intended to be. But if your are looking for a good deal then you may be lead astray.

I've bought both new and used firearms for LGS, gun shows and individuals. Some have been better deals than others. If I just have to have something I will usually pay more than I should.

Colts do retain their value better than some, but that doesn't mean your should pay near "new retail" for a used firearm that is still being manufactured. Some colts are collectables as previously stated. This is where knowing the specifics about the firearm in question will help.

$900 for a used colt govt model is not a good deal unless it is special for some other reason. At least that is the case here in Texas, I can not speak to New York pricing.

Good luck to you,

Depends on if you want a shooter or a collector model. The one you saw might have a story that makes it more valuable. If that's the case make sure you get the story in writing and verified.

If you want a shooter then the price is too high. As others have said you can get a new one for that. (Genuine Colt to boot!)

Or you can go to my personal fav Springfield Armory and get a Range Officer.

You can look over all their models here:

Looks like a XSE Model which is obviously worth more than the base model. I suspect if it’s in good shape you probably did ok.

Yeah everything looks good on it from what I can see. Haven't had time to break it down though. It also has trijicon night sights on it.
