i'm going to be getting a savage tactical .308 with a burris tactical scope for a graduation present. i would appreciate any info on the savage tactical if anyone happens to have one or has shot one in the past.
Please do a search for Savage tactical of Savage 10 fp. There are a ton of posts concerning this rifle. Some love them and others are just plain haters.
I will tell you right off that I have owned one for 7 months and couldn't be happier with the purchase and the rifle.
Many people complain about the triggers and stocks, but I actually like them. Sure I'd buy a new stock if there was a really good one for a few hundred bucks, but I have yet to see one that catches my eye.
My trigger was easily adjusted without having to be replaced. But from the sounds of it the trigger on mine is different than many other owners. Mine was made to be adjustable, so I took advantage of it. Sharp Shooter seems to be the aftermarket trigger of choice.
If there are specific question you have please ask. You will get answers here.
I own a savage TACTIC (As it appears on the gun) in the short action .308. i love it. Very accurate rifle. I use a cheapo simmons scope and it woks fine. Lots of people will say that it has a crappy trigger and a lousy stock. Until i held my friends Sig i couldn't understand why they said this.
However the rifle is still tops in my book. I put 10 bullets through the same three holes. at 100yrds. I plan on getting a drop in aftermarket trigger. It doesn't really need it in my opinion but i like to tinker. Also I am looking for a stock liek my friends sig.
Both of the changes i intend to make are not things it needs. The savage is a great gun. But just like giving a car a new paint job and better exhaust this will make it better. The other thing is i have a nice heavy target barrel the my friends Sig which cost $75 more will not.
I have used both federal and south african surplus. My rifle like the S.A stuff slightly better. this is to say that i had sub moa with teh federal and same hole with the S.A.
Hi Cookhj,
I love my savage tactic 10 FP in .308 24" (I heard they're selling the 20" barrel one too). No complains here yet. I'm planning to upgrade my trigger(sharpshooter) and the stock for the choate varmint stock(although still lookin for some other styles ) All of this upgrading is just because of me..not really necessary.
I highly recommend it ..
GoodLuck and be safe,
TACTICALDUDE
thanks guys, i've heard and read good things about the rifle (except for the usual gripe about the trigger), i just wanted to hear what other shooters and savage owners have to say about it. from the way it looks, i won't be disappointed!
If you're more concerned with how a rifle performs than how it "looks" or "feels", then I'd say you're in for a treat!
I mounted a Tasco World Class 3-9x50 scope on mine, slipped a Harris bipod on it, bought a few boxes of PMC's loading of the Sierra 168-gr. HPBT, and proceeded to make itty-bitty groups (three touching holes) at 100 yards after I sighted it in. Total cost: just short of $600 (excluding the ammo).
The bolts are usually not the smoothest in the world, and the trigger and stock aren't the best available. But there's not another rifle anywhere near its price range that will deliver the same performance where it counts: downrange.
"Happy" is where you'll start. It'll go up from there!
