today a friend of mine is giving me an old savage stevens 58 bolt action 20 gauge, which will be my first shotgun, and i was wondering if anyone knew how you release the hammer without firing? my friend said you might need a 'snap cap' . . sorry if its a stupid question im a long gun newb

I am not positive on that model but on many bolt guns, you simply raised the bolt and pull trigger while returning bolt to closed... on a verified empty chamber of course...
On the ones I have had this work the firing pin moved in nice and slow.

Thats exactly what I do with my bolt action rifles. check chamber pull bolt out like im loading it and hold the trigger the hole time and push the bolt back in to the chamber. (again when its not loaded lol)
