Savage package rimfire scope?

What do you guys think about the savage package scopes? I bought a savage gvxp. It's got a OD green synthetic stock, blued action, free floated, fluted barrel, and accutrigger.

It came with a 3-9x40mm that I believe may be originally manufactured by simmons. It seems okay, but it glares like a mother ****er, eye relief is really sensitive (are all optics this way or are some more forgiving in this department than others? I'm pretty new to optics.), and the glass lacks clarity under high power. Since I don't have a way to see what the scope costs independent of the rifle, I have a hard time judging its quality vs other stuff. Would it be worthwhile to upgrade if I want to cap my budget at $50-75? I know there is infinitely better glass out there, but I only want to bother if I'll get a lot of bang for my buck doing so.

Years ago, the Savage package rifles came with a halfway decent Bushnell scope. The Simmons that I have seen on them the last couple of years are garage sale fodder at best. I picked up a BVSS last year and swapped the scope out before firing the first shot. The view through the scope that came with it was like looking through a fish bowl. You will be going directly sideways (if not backwards) with another $50 scope.

one of the better scopes i can think of in that price range is one of the Bushnell Banner series. i have seen 3-9x models for as little as $65. the glass clarity is excellent even at the higher powers.

bushnell is also great with customer service, and their scopes have a lifetime warranty.

a decent set of rings will run you about $20, but you could probably use the ones that came with the package scope.

still, i dont think i would get a new scope until the one you have either breaks or proves itself incapable of holding zero.

Thanks everyone. That helps me out a lot. I can deal with the package scope, so I think I'll keep it on for now. This gun will be primarily used to deal with woodchucks out to about 50 yds and other small game (rabbits, squirrel), so the best glass isn't really all that essential.

Cat, it is a $60.00 scope. Seems that Savage puts that same scope on all of their "Package" rifles. Took mine off a 243 from Savage and put it on my deer hunting rifle a Marlin 336c in 35 Remington. Not a bad scope for that purpose, not the best but not the worst either. Keep your power between 3 and 8 and it will be as clear as glass.

I wouldn't go that far.Even today's cheapest scopes should work just fine on a .22 lr
Simmons isn't nearly as bad as most people make them out to be.They're owned by Bushnell ya know.

The only thing Bushnell makes that I would ever consider buying is the elite series... I had a new simmons blow up and they wanted $$$ to fix it... Not acceptable...

There are good low cost scopes but they normally run over $100 such as the Mueller or if you want American made Redfield which is made in the Leupold factory, I have a Redfield 2x7 mounted on a Mini-30 very clear holds zero, I believe it was $120 they also have a 3x9 honestly for anyone not looking for more power the Redfield line is tough to beat, basically Leupold with a rough finish.
Most of the package deals are simply junk scopes and it handicaps the shooter especially a new shooter trying to learn, I've had people show me there setup at the range and the scopes are so bad it appears to be an old scope of 80 years previous. I simply wont buy a package deal unless the price is excellent since I will toss scope anyway.
