I have a savage mdl 99F s/n 950xxx win.308, it has a small oval stamp with the letters (SP) on the top left side of barrel. it also has what looks like the letter J stamped on the left side under the stamp that says SAVAGE model 99 that is on top left side of reciever. it has brass counter on left side and safety on right side of lever. can anyone tell me the date of manufacture.

The Savage 99F in that caliber was made between 1955 and 1973. The "SP" means Savage Proof, the equivalent to "WP" for Winchester Proof and "REP" for Remington English Proof.

The U.S. has no law requiring proof or setting standards, but the better quality American makers do subject their guns to proof and stamp them accordingly. Some countries accept that as meeting their own proof standards but some (e.g., Britain) do not and require re-proving of American arms on import.
