The serial dates to 1941.

After further reading, I've got to ask.
Is the stock a pistol grip, with checkering.
Forearm should be schnoble, with a metal piece to allow removal.
Barrel should be 22 or 24 inches.
Is it a take down barrel?
If this fits it should be a 99G model.
What chambering?
Good rifle, enjoy it.

It is chambered in .300 savage.

Very good cartridge, doesn't get a lot of respect today.
I've taken 8 deer with it in a Savage 99.

What does it mean if the E on the lever boss doesn’t have an oval around it and no inspector number?

According to all research I've got, the letter codes didn't start until 1949.
Your rifle dates from 1941, so I would say the advice to contact the Savage collectors is your best bet.
I've learned a lot, but I'm not up on all on the 99.
