Savage model 6A, Help

I have a Savage Arms model 6A .22 that says it will shoot .22 short, Long or Long Rifle. Long Rifle only as an Automatic. It was my Grandfathers. Can anyone tell me anything about it. How old? ANY Thing would be appreciated.
 
It was manufactured between 1938 and 1968. Pre-war examples featured checkered pistol grip stocks, post-war examples were smooth. Sorry I can't provide more info. :(
