Savage model 25 .17 Hornet lightweight varminter or walking varminter?

I want to hunt P-Dogs out to 300 yards.

I know it depends on the actual gun you get but...
Which do you think would have more of a chance of being accurate?

I have a model 25 T in 223. It's really accurate with any 55 gr ammo. Even the cheap stuff. It will not work with steel case ammo.

I do not think a 17 will do well @ 300 yards.

The 223 is a heck of a lot more versatile and will reach out well past 300yards with more munch. Ammo is cheap and there's a round for about any kind of hunting you'd want to do from deer down to varmint.

Watched a young man successfully kill prairie dogs way past 100 yards with the .17 Mach2 rimfire. I'm sure the .17 Hornet will have no problems reaching 300 yards and cleanly taking prairie dogs. However, it won't be as cheap or as versatile as the .223 Rem. That said if you really want a .17 Hornet go for it.

A walking varminter IS a lightweight varminter. If you ever see a "real" varmint rifle, you will understand. Most have medium-heavy barrels in fairly heavy stocks that help steady the rifle for accurate shooting of targets that are 2" across and 12" tall at distances up to 500-ish yds. For example, my first 22-250 had a 28" #5 profile barrel on it and weighed in at 11.4 lbs with scope. Not exactly "walking varminter" material, but it shot well when set up shooting prone at ground squirrels from 100-500 yds.

Then I got my first "walking varminter", an Interarms Mini-Mauser in 223, which weighed in at 5.5 lbs with scope, and I was finally able to hike 5 to 10 miles looking for coyotes or jackrabbits without feeling like I needed shoulder surgery at the end of the day. Sure, it could not reach waaay out there to 500 yds on small targets, but those shots are so few and far between that it doesn't matter.

My model 25 is the lightweight walking varmiter. It weighs 9.2 lbs with a decent scope on it. For me its perfect. I shoot it in the 100 yard offhand rifle match every week. My last score was 462 out of 500. The accutrigger can be brought down to just over a pound if you like. They had one in 22 hornet, but I ordered the 223 because cheap ammo.

I have a savage model 93/17 which weighs 7.8 lbs with a scope. It's 17 HMR. Ammo is cheap compared to center fire. It shoots 1" all day @ 100. It too has a 1.25 lb accutrigger. The 17 drops 8" at 200 yards when sighted right on @ 100.
