Savage model 220a

A freind of mine was going through a divorce and sold me a Savage hammerless single shot 16ga. I bought it to do him a favor but when I took the gun out and shot it WOW. It has a 36 inch barrel and holds a pattern like I have never seen.

There was a group of crows raiding our field corn and I wanted to scare them out. It is 210 feet from where the truck was parked to the first row of corn. I picked one crow not even thinking of doing any damage other than making them fly. When I pulled the trigger the crow crumbled like he was hit with a 22mag. Now I did aim just a little high but I was using a standart 1 1/8th oz load of #5 shot.

Is there anyone else that owns one of these fine weapons and what configuration is yours. It would be good to hear some other stories also.

You might be

I don't own one but it sounds like it has a full choke barrel. I shot some trap a few weeks ago from the 25yd position and since I'm slow the bird was probably around 65yds away by the time the shot hit it. My Citori with a full choke barrel atomized the clays when I hit them centered.

Savage made the 220 as a single shot that equaled their doubles in finish.

While almost all US made singles other than dedicated trap models were hammer guns, the 220 wasn't.

A and F, back when they were a sporting outfitter had some 220s in cases that fit into a car trunk and took up little space. The 220s were succeeded by a Beretta single that folded up until the muzzle was near the butt.

I like the 220s, but I'm SO easy when it comes to shotguns....
