My wife told me to get a new gun for my birthday next week. I am curious about the 6.5 I have shot one nice round it was a custom built by one of guys in club. I have always been partial to Savage and Remington for accurate rifles only Rugers I have had were decent for hunting but not really tack drivers. I have read lot of good on the target guns Ruger make but would like real world experience on one if it is a accurate rifle and how it compares to the Savage I know would be accurate or at least my others are. The Ruger looks a lot better but curious how they shoot. I will reload like I do for other calibers. I will shoot mostly 100-200 yds can go to 500.
Thanks

I am just getting into Long Range Accurate Rifle Shooting and have been talking to people, going to matches and reading a lot. If you look at the F Class Shooters as well as the 100-300 Yard Bench Rest Shooters and the 600 - 1,000 Yard Bench Rest Shooters, you will see that most are using custom actions by BAT, Kelby etc. and the ones that aren't are using Remington 700, sleeved 722s or 40XB Actions. Easy to get better triggers for the Remington's. Jewel for the competitor. If you are going to class shoot, watch the weight also as at 12 3/4 pounds it does not leave much room to stay in Heavy Varmint Bench Rest Class when adding a scope and rings.

The Savage looks like it would be a fun gun for casual local club shooting.

After a lot of input from guys in the know, I have decided for 100-300 yard bench rest shooting a Heavy Varmint (13.5 pounds all in weight) rifle in 6mmBR though 6PPC is the predominant cartridge for that discipline. For 600-1000 yards, Light bench rest (17 pounds total all in weight) 6.5 x 47.

I started out considering a Savage Model 12 Bench Rest. The 6.5 x 284 seems to be a great long range cartridge with low barrel life.
