Savage Model 111 new scope

It currently has the Nikon 3-9x40 BDC. Am planning on putting it on a Marlin XT-22. Don't know if this is overkill, maybe, but instead of dropping money on a scope for that rifle it seems more sense for me to get a new one for my hunting rifle. Unless there is no need and I can find something for the Marlin. At the moment I am aiming somewhere between $200-$300. But then again, this is my inexperience speaking out loud.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
 
The Nikon is a decent enough hunting scope, so its a coin flip as to what your choice is. Frankly most modern 3-9 scopes do a good job for the usual distances. 400 yards or so, maybe as much as 600 (game dependent, a Antelope at 600 maybe not so much)

It also a bit of a heavy line reticle. That makes it not such a good choice for a 22 where a finer line is better if you are target shooting.

While its a bit on the costly side, Leuopold make a 22 rimfire scope in 2-7, its been on sale on and off recently at $84 as I recall (usually around $100)

So it depends on what you want to do with the XT. I like to shoot tiny holes at 50 yards with my CZ so the Leopold Rimfire was a good choice.

There are other less costly rimfire scopes out there as well and the 22 oblivious does not hammer one.

The Marlin is an under $300 small game rifle. Not really much point in putting a cf scope on it. Mind you, another Nikon can be had for under $200, plus the rings and bases, at Cabela's.
"...if this is overkill..." More about the weight and length on a 6 pound .22. The Nikon weighs 13.7 ounces and is a foot long.

Whar caliber, what kind of game, distance, wooded or open ground..

I personally haven't been impressed with Nikon optics as far as their rifle scopes are concerned. Supposed to be tough as nails though.

Leupold makes some really nice scopes.
Vortex Crossfire II line isn't bad for the money. 4-12X42 goes for about $169.

Lately i've been really impressed with Sightron.
 
Honestly the scope it has was not bad when used this past season. Because I haven't had much use with different scopes, I don't have anything to compare the Nikon.

Main use for the XT is just as RC20 stated, "shoot tiny holes" at different distances. Can you provide a link to the Leuopold? Tried Cabelas but not there.

I did go to Cabelas and spoke to a rep and they suggested Nikon P-Rimfire 2-7x32.

As was said, the Nikon is a good scope, that you currently have.

I picked up a Sightron S1 3-9X40 TAC with their HHR reticle ( same as everyone elses BDC) from Amazon for $98 delivered.
Showed it to several friends. We were all impressed with the quality of the glass, especially so at that price point.
