Savage Model 10 stock

I have a Savage model 10FXP .308 and I'm looking to upgrade it a little. It has an accutrigger and a standard contour barrel along with an original non-accustock. I've also got a redfield revolution 3-9x40 scope with leopold mounts and rings. I'm pretty sure it has a center feed mag (it stays in the stock when I remove it).

I use the rifle primarily for deer hunting and some paper punching. Its kind of my do all rifle. I generally like it, but i hate the flimsiness of the stock. So the main question, what are my options for upgrading the stock? I want to keep it a lightweight hunting rifle and I don't mind the blind magazine. I hear accustocks cost an arm and a leg from savage and its not worth the effort to bed the factory stock. I've looked at some hogue stocks but they seem to be for detachable box mags. I don't want to spend much more than $200 or so.

So if I get a different stock will the mag just switch into the new stock? Will I have to switch to a hinged floor plate? is that possible? I Don't want to spend $200 on a kit to switch to a detachable box mag bottom metal only to spend another $100 for extra mags.

Well the dilemma is that you can have cheap and you can have light weight but you usually can't have both. Any stock with a full length aluminum bedding block is going to be heavier than what you have now. Anything as light as you currently have but in a more stable stock is going to be more expensive to get more than $200 usually. The other problem is that very few stock makers seem to be building a hunting rifle stock for the Savage 4.40" centerfeed short action, most accommodate the varmint/tactical shooter.

You might be better off trying to buy a factory wood take off stock for a 4.40" screw spacing from Ebay, GB, or other auction site. It will be more rigid than the factory synthetic stock, and won't weigh a lot more. Another affordable option is the Boyd's Laminated or Walnut stock for $100 roughly, unfortunately the weigh about 3 lbs so it isn't a light weight option. You'll want to have either of these full length glass bed to stabilize the barrel channel, but don't worry you can still do this and have a free floating barrel. Most gunsmiths charge around $100-150 for this if you don't want to attempt it yourself.

Your first best option for a synthetic stock is a Stockade Gunstock however, they start at $300 for a "money saver" stock which is basically unsealed and unpainted. The most options you are going to have is from McMillan and also the most expensive. The Savage Model 7 stock would be the lightest stock you could go without stepping into the Hunters Compact Edge stock. Once you step into the carbon fiber Edge fill in McMillan you are looking at a $600 stock.
 
Don't know about the hole spacing and all, but it looks like Optics Planet has a Hogue stock, with aluminum block, for your rifle, for $170.
 
I've heard several horror stories about optics planet and ordering stocks, mostly canceling orders after a week or so, stuff like that. But, yeah I havent seen hogue stocks like that anywhere else beside the hogue store which is $280.

Be sure before you order a stock. There's a helpful link here, but the easiest way is to measure the action screws. What we call the centerfeed action is also known as the 3rd Generation Short and measures 4.400 (center-to-center). What we normally call the stagger-feed is also known as the 2nd Generation Short and measures 4.275 between the action screws. If you've got the accutrigger, then the rifle is likely a 2nd generation or a 3rd generation.

Boyd's had a lot of stocks for Savage rifles.

Boyds has a very good selection of stock for Savage. You can also look at Stocky's Stocks,they also carry several types for them.

If your magazine stays in your stock when you remove the action,you have a centerfeed action. There's a little clip that holds it in,and it can be removed and put into another stock.

If you want a composite stock,look on Midway USA,they carry several.
 
I need some help too, about my Savage 10 stock

Hello,

I bought a Savage rifle to use making a 358 Hoosier. Worked fine and I learned about stuff from the experience. My first effort and it shot 1.0moa with one load only.

Now I plan to rebarrel with a 6.5.

My sporter style stock has an aluminum center plate and pillar bedding. Is this not normal? It fits me like a glove and I plan to keep it.
Is this a good stock, or is it one that people throw away to get a more stylish one? The barrel is free floated and rides centered in the forearm. It looks and feels very good to me (fits me). I really hope it will work.

Goal is a 1/2 moa 6.5. My 0.6 223 and my 0.75 22-250 don’t fit me nearly as well.
All help and knowledgeable advice gratefully accepted.
