I live in Illinois. Just recieved my FOID card and I am looking to get a durable and accurate bolt action .22 long rifle. Im kind of leaning towards a Savage, but Im open to any suggestions and comments. Thanks

I don't understand why everyone here gets so excited about the savage mkII line. I bought an FSS mkII for my nephew and really am not impressed by it at all. The ruger 77/22 I have sitting next to me is a much better rifle in almost every regard.

the savage is a good gun for a little cheaper price the 77/22 is a real shooter but coast more both are good but for the money the savage is the way to go

Yeah, im only looking to spend somewhere around $200. I know firearm dealer's prices are a lot cheaper than buying them online. So that's why I was going with Savage

Gosh, there are always trade-off and sounds like you have done a bit of homework on this subject. I personally would recommend a Savage and if you were leaning toward a 77/22, I wouldn't have a problem with this either. In fact, there are few current makes that I would have a problem with. What I do have a problem with, are people who put one against another. It's a matter of personal choice. If there were any serious issues with the Savage, I would certainly say so. ;)

Now, if you are still looking for options, then take a look at the CZ's. ... :)

Be Safe !!!

The great thing about the Savage is that you can get them brand new from Wallyworld for $137 (non accutriger model). Yes, there are better rifles out there. However, you'd be very hard pressed to find a better rifle that you can get for that small price.

Yeah the only problem is, I live live in Joliet, Illinois. The only places that sell guns around here are Gander Mountain and Bass Pro.

Does Illinois commie law prevent you from jumping across the border and buying one in a neighboring state?

I have the Savage MkII BV - the one with the laminated wood stock and heavy barrel. Real nice handling 22 and VERY accurate. That accutrigger is a good feature. I mounted a Weaver rimfire scope on it and put on a sling. It's one FUN rimfire rifle at a price that's easy to take.

I agree that the 77/2 is better, but you can buy 2 or 3 MKII's for the price of the Ruger. The Ruger is in a totally different price range.

mdd's response came before a price range was stated, so we might want to cut him some slack. Anyone could have just as easily suggested Anshutz or Cooper. That said, I think pound for pound, and dollar for dollar, the Savage is really tough to beat. There are many polished, super slick rifles out there, but I just can't see myself paying double or triple the money for those extra qualities that have nothing to do with accuracy. Maybe if I had money to burn, but most of us don't.

I have been looking and comparing for a couple months now. I was going to buy the CZ 452. But, you could get the Savage with the accutrigger and a cheapo scope that would work for the same price as the CZ. I'm planning on getting a Savage this weekend, but going with just the iron sights. The CZ is definitely better fit and finish but the Savage is good enough for what my skill level will ever be.

Oh and I was going to get the semi auto 10/22 but then decided to get a bolt action. When I looked at the Ruger 77/22 I bout s*** a brick at the price. I'm not paying that for a rimfire when I'm never going to be competing with it. CZ, Savage (accutrigger only), Marlin in that order for me on the bolt action .22.

CZs are a disease..

If you look at the higher end Savage Mark II's not found on the rack at Walmart, you will find that you will have to spend money on a 77/22 to make it shoot as well as the Savage.. I like the 77/22 but they generally need help to shoot well.

Tip,
What are you planning to do with the rifle? Hunt, plink, target, safe queen, paper weight, etc.?

Hunt/Plink, go with the Savage/Marlin since they're light and accurate out of the box and the price is right. If you drop it, it won't hurt as much.

Target, go with the CZ. Great accuracy for the money. Also, the $400 CMP Kimber looks good.

Safe queen, go with Cooper.

Paper weight, go with Mossberg.

Too much disposable income.... Anschutz.

All I can speak to is my experience with this particular savage mkII. I ordered the stainless/synthetic model for him because I expected it to be more durable than its wood/blued counterpart. However, the bolt surface started to corrode almost immediately. As for accuracy, the rear sight did not have enough elevation to put rounds in the bullseye at 50 yards. Aiming "on target" left the rounds four inches low. Five different types of 22 lr ammo gave similar or worse results. The magazine is an awkward, poorly located thing.
My nephew loves the gun because its his first rifle. I think its a piece of junk & wish I'd spent the extra $200 to get him a nice used 77/22.
