Savage lever rifles?

I hear about these a lot. Savage lever rifles. I saw a small .45 Colt lever carbine in a gun store once.

Are they all out of production now? I've been to Savage's website, http://www.savagearms.com, and all they seem to produce now is bolt action rifles.

Uhm... Well, you didn't see a Savage lever action in .45 Colt. None were ever made in that chambering, to the best of my knowledge.

Arthur Savage initially tried to interest the US and other militaries in his lever action in the early 1890s. Among the first of his designs were chambered for the .44-40 Winchester round.

After several design variations he finally developed what was released commercially as the 1899.

The first chamberings were in .30-30, .38-55, and .32-40. Later other chamberings came along, including the .300 and .250 Savage cartridges.

The Savage 1899-design holds the distinction of being offered in more standard chamberings (14 plus 1 shotshell, the .410), than any other lever action rifle.

I've got a very nice little Savage 99 EG in .300 Savage made in 1936.
