Savage Lever non-extraction

I buddy has a Savage lever rifle in .308 that consistantly fails to extract the case from the chamber. He has to stuff a rod down the barrel. One of these days he will ship it off to Savage for repair.

What are the potential and likely causes of this problem and how good is Savage with repairs? Will they do it for free or charge him? What is the turnaround time?

Thanks,

Rick

Without seeing the gun, the first guess would be a broken extractor, which any gunsmith should be able to fix. If the bolt comes open easily, leaving the case in the chamber, this could be the problem.

Second guess would be a dirty or pitted chamber. Try cleaning it by running a cleaning rod (with no brush or tip) in from the muzzle, then screwing a .45 pistol bronze brush on the end of the rod by turning the rod. Pull the brush into the chamber and rotate it to clean the chamber. then remove the brush and put on a slotted tip and a patch with a good bore cleaner, rotate it in the chamber then pull it through the barrel.

What type(s) of ammo?

A neighbor of mine had a similar problem in a 50s-vintage S-99 in .308.

Funny thing is, it extracted just fine with factory ammo.

The action characteristics are such that if the extractor is okay and the chamber is not rough, failure to extract are a very early warning of excess chamber pressure.

Beyond that, Jim K. said it all.
