anyone here tried one of their barrels. Prices are attractive and they have a .243 in 1:7 twist on the shelf but I am curious as to how they break in and shoot. I cant find reviews or even a thread on them anywhere. I am wondering how they compare to Brux, Krieger, Pac Nor, and Rock Creek

Never heard of them... You might want to look at McGowen Barrels

will do, heard of McGowen and they are on my short list. Leaning heavily toward a Rock Creek as s couple of the better shooters at the club are in love with theirs. Still waiting on word from the machinist to see what the price wait time would be on a 1:7 twist.

From what I understand, from their webpage, Savage Barrels.com uses McGowen barrels. I don't know how they're affiliated, but here's what they say..
Due to overwhelming demand for our barrels & McGowen turn around times for barrels has increased to approximately 6 weeks

Other vendors who stock Savage Pre-fit barrels are Pac Nor and 4-D Products. Sharpshooter Supply offers pre-fit Douglas barrels.

Looks like I need to make a few phone calls this week, if Savage Barrels.com uses McGowen I might just end up going with them. Big issue so far is getting a 1:7 off the shelf preturned and chambered and they offer that. Need to call my machinist friend and see see what the turn around time and price would be on that cut rifled Rock Creek in 1:7. The twist seems to be the issue, most of the off the shelf pre threaded stuff is 1:8 or higher.

I am coming to the conclusion that all the barrel makers use about the same steel and the only major differences is whether it is cut or button and whether they hand lap them or not. Seems as it is like low cost rifles, everyone is making good ones just depends on the flavor of the month. Like one guy said the other day the reason Kreiger is winning lots of matches is that a lot of good shooters are using Kreigers, if all the shooter switched to Brux the scores would not change.

I have the barrel that you are looking at a 1:7 twist 26" heavy varmint .243 barrel. It is very accurate and I'm pleased with the barrel. However, Savage-barrels didn't cut the threads deep enough and I was unable to screw it into my action. I took it to a local smith and had him chase the threads even though Savage-barrels was willing to do it, just for the convience of having it done in one day.

I'll probably buy another barrel from them as I find a need to repalce another one. If I can find a good price on another rifle or short action I just might have a .358 Win. Right now I have prefits on three Savage rifles 6x47 SinArms, .250 Savage ER Shaw, and the .243 Savage-barrels. The only one I haven't shot yet is the .250 barrel so I can't tell you on its performance yet.

Thanks Taylorce - ever shoot any of the 115gr Dtacs or 105 Lapua Scenars through it. I am looking for as much speed and BC as I can get for F class open. According to 6mmbr the Scenars like a tight bore

No I haven't tried any of those bullets yet. I did have it throated for the 115 DTAC's but I haven't started loading them yet. 105 A-Max and 107 SMK are all I've shot so far. Both bullets so far have provided stellar accuracy.

thanks again, most of my shooting will be fooling around with the SMK's, I started shooting the 155 SMK's in my .308 as a lower cost alternative to the Berger 155.5's and seems like the gun likes them better

Why not by McGowen barrels from McGowen instead of another source? I'd rather go straight to the maker than the middleman! :D

McGowen Barrels

Talk to Dan Wynne at McGowen Barrels. He is straight forward and very helpful! I just sent him and email on a project that I am working on and got this response.

Stainless Steel Barrel Bull Contour (26")
+ $289
+ $99.00 (fluting)
+ $35.00 (Threading)
+ (Shipping)

Turnaround is approximately 6 to 8 weeks.

That's not a bad lead time.

Ordering direct from the manufacturer usually works only if you have months (and months) of time to wait.

I called ER Shaw because their pricing was really attractive for barrels in the white. Six month lead time...

That's why they're usually sold through these "retailers". They buy them in bulk (at a discount, I'm sure), then just flip them to you and I for a profit.

There are plenty of reasons to go through a middle man to buy a barrel.

#1 They might have the barrel you want in stock ready to ship no wait.

#2 They might be able to sell you a barrel cheaper than the maker. They can buy in quantities that will enable them to pass on savings to the user. If you watch you can often buy barrels cheaper through the middle man.

Yeah, but a lot of what Gun Shack has in stock is the sporter contour...
Fine for hunting, but not what target shooters are going to want. They do have a .308 in varmint contour which will be avail. in January according to their site.
