Savage Barrel Installation/Nut Torque

Alrighty, got my new barrel today for my Savage Varmint Project #1 :) , .224 TTH, also called the .224/6mm. Readers Digest version: take a 6mm Remington case, neck it down to take a .224 bullet, load it with some slow magnum powder and an 80gn VLD, and it shoots straight and flat forever! ;)
Anyway, getting the old barrel off my donor action required a barrel nut wrench, a 3 foot breaker bar, and a whole host of curses in at least 2 different languages.
I know all about removing the ejector and extractor, setting the headspace with a gauge and tightning the barrel.
To what setting do I torque the barrel nut? Anything specific, or "German" (Guttentight)? :confused: :confused:

And I suppose the real question would be HOW to actually MEASURE torque when using that large barrel nut wrench.
 
For the torque specification I would contact Savage and ask them. I would imagine that they have a web site.

As for measuring the torque it will depend on the tool that you are going to put on the barrel nut, what size torque wrench you have access to, and your ability to understand concept of torque, no slam just observation over many years of number of mechanics that did not understand.
 
Allow me to throw my .02 into the discussion. I made a Savage Tactical Rifle sometime ago and could not get good answers. What I did was 1) made a 3/8 hole in the barrel nut wrench so I could use a torque wrench with it 2) tried many torque settings until the nut "broke" 3) set the torque at 10% less than breaking torque and 4) torqued the barrel to that torque value. While this is not scientific, the rifle worked great for years. If I had to do it over however, I would have Shaw make me a barrel with a shoulder and treat it just like a Mauser system.:rolleyes:
