I picked up a savage axis in 22-250, and am supper surprised with its accuracy. For anyone thats looking for a good budget predator or target gun, you should seriously look at the savage axis!

My Son won a scoped/camo .223 package gun @ a game dinner raffle this past Spring ($20 in tickets), and he just loves it to death - which it is on local 'yotes, which are being seen more/more often in our local suburban deer hunting areas.

.

I bought two at Christmas, to give to early-teen grandsons. Both of them are left-handed/left eyed, and the Axis comes in a southpaw version. That made the difference between the Savage and the Ruger American.

Both rifles are in .25-06 and both are as accurate as the boys are. They have no problem keeping them in 2" at 100 yards, and as they're both novice shooters I believe that the rifles would do much better with a more experienced shooter behind the trigger.

I have 2 of them in223 and 243. Both ,with hand loads will stay under a inch at 100 yards. No mods,no updates for them, but for 300.00 you can't go wrong. Will hold accuracy with the best in the right hands for sure. And if you damage them, not a big deal at that price.

It's a savage, accuracy should've been expected! Seriously for the $277 Wal Mart price tag there isn't a better hunting rifle for the money available.

I love mine. I shoot 5.56 and .223 reloads out of mine. It shoots as good as ones that cost twice as much. It is a keeper.

Big al, I have considered the after market trigger for the Axis. The only negative with the Axis is the lack of the Accu-trigger. I would compare the stock trigger to that of my stock Bushmaster AR, not much creep or grit, just heaaaavvvy.

I'm a fan of the Axis too. For an inexpensive rifle it is certainly plenty accurate. However, the trigger is way too heavy. I tired to remove a coil or two from the stock trigger spring and that did take the trigger pull from about 8 pounds to 5 pounds. But I recently installed the Rifle Basix trigger and it is a night and day change. I have it set around 2.5 pounds but it can go lighter. It probably took about 20 minutes to install and get all the adjustments just right. No special tools needed, just a little mechanical aptitude and an Allen wrench and away you go.

No mods,no updates for them

Here's a thought:

Buy a gun that does not need to be "modded" (a.k.a. "jacked with") to work well ....

2.5 lbs is a ND waiting to happen.

2.5# is not that bad for a hunting rifle in proper working condition. All of my hunting rifles are very close to that right now. My bench rifles are even less. As long as the trigger/safety work properly, user is using proper safety techniques, and is comfortable with the trigger pull, what's the problem?

2.5 lbs is not even close to a "ND waiting to happen" and cutting coils isn't exactly a new practice. No one said he didn't know what he has doing either. Most people "jack with" guns in some way, every gun can be improved with a little work, extra $ need not be spent for something you can do on your own.

....
Sorry jim. That was not the meaning behind my statement. I have a few rifles ( Bench Rest ) right now that needed no mods ( Savage as well ). My point is for the money , even with no mods ( which there are now I guess). It is still a very good rifle for the price. I would venture to say that 90% of deer hunters buy a rifle, put a scope on it and shoot it. You need to remember the members in here are the over and beyond club. Your normal deer hunnter shoots what he has. I know 1 guy at work that has a 30-06. He got a 20 round box of shells 7 years ago. He takes 3 with him for deer hunnting and when he is done he puts 2 back in the box. I ask him about sighting it in and his reply.. It was sighted in last year when I shot my deer why do I need to do it again. Ok after all that dribble i just did, My point is most people do nothing to there rifles other than shoot,No Mods,No updates,No camo, Just shoot their deer and go home
