Savage Axis rifles - Thoughts?

The point being, I purchased the rifle for the barreled action and scope (it happened to be used, with a very good scope already installed) - and considered the plastic stock to be a throwaway. I "fixed" the stock only as an experiment - to see if it could be done. Anyone buying any of the "economy grade" rifles, from any of the manufacturers, should probably plan on replacing the standard equipment plastic stocks, from the beginning. Unless you wish to spend a lot of time and effort modifying it, as I did. Fortunately, pretty good quality laminated wood stocks are available for relatively little $$ (this is ultimately the type of stock I chose, though I still have the modded plastic stock as a backup).
I've done 5 of these "tupperware stock" mods so far at a cost of about $25.00 each (unless you paint it also) and while it's true the mag well area remains a weak flex point --that only matters if I do a cheek weld that presses down with enough force to get a flex going with the whole rifle leveraged between a front support and back support. Very easy to compensate for in my experience. It will take a day to do the mods--but what's there to lose if you're going to ditch the plastistock anyway? All the stocks I've done (Axis, 111 and Ruger American) shoot great and are still fairly light weight. Plus I can bash them around with hardly a care when hunting in the woods. : )
