Savage Axis Mag capacity

I'm well aware that there is a thread concerning high(er) cap mags for the Axis rifle. My question is about the STANDARD magazine: Is it true that it works fine with FIVE (instead of the specified four)?

I don't want to damage anything by trying, but there are some yt vids claiming that the actual capacity is 5... (sorry I can't find the sources in a rush, anyway...)

I was told in my LGS that it was strictly a 4+1 rifle besides the .223 and similar sized calibers. I think they said something 2-3mm bigger in diameter.
They've been wrong before about this type of stuff though.

I can definitely only fit 4 in my 308 magazine. I actually see them usually advertised as a 3 round magazine even for the 308 family. But I'd bet the 223 can fit 5

I have a Savage Axis in 223, and it feeds fine with 5 rds, you just cant have the bolt closed when you put the magazine in, because it wont fit right.

So, I can put 5 rounds in the magazine and insert it with the bolt open, and then close the bolt. This leaves me with 1 in the chamber and 4 in the magazine. OR I can load 1 in the chamber, close the bolt, and load 4 in the magazine inserting it with the bolt closed. AGAIN leaving me with a total of 5 rounds on board.

Seems to me, it is the same difference either way.

exactly what I intended to point out!
