Got to try out a new Savage Axis 243 today. Shot a 1/2 in group with it with factory ammo. Trigger was way to heavy for my taste, is there a easy fix for that or is Timney the way to go?
Try the Youtube trick of snipping coils off the trigger spring before you drop the $100 on a Timney. I am not saying that Timney's are not worth it, but you may be surprised how much better the trigger will be after removing a couple coils.
I own 2 Axis rifles, and they both got the same trigger treatment.
By either replacing the spring on trigger (with a lighter one) or shortening the factory spring, plus some careful honing polishing on the trigger sear, you should be able to get your Axis trigger pull down to under 3 lbs. Mine is around 2 1/2 lbs. Just be aware, with either method, too short a spring or too light a spring causes a problem with sear engaging properly.
I went to ACE hardware and bought a few springs in various sizes. Put on the trigger scale and swapped until I found one that gave me 3.8 pounds. I did clip about 1 coil of spring to bring it down from 4.1 lbs.
The gun was VERY accurate and my wife loved it until she got her hands on an AR.
Have to consider if you want to keep the rifles stock parts stock. {it may make a difference to its next owner} Easy to remove the Axis trigger group and replace with a Timney. As you know the Timney will accommodate adjustment. If wanting to clip a couple coils off the original trigger group. I would suggest contacting Savage first and purchase the spring you intend to clip.
I totally agree with you sure shot, I have found a replacment spring on amazon which is lighter so I can keep the stock spring to bring it back original. If it were my rifle I would buy a timney but it belongs to a friend who bought the gun because of its low cost. The only bad thing I have found with it is the trigger. If and when I buy one I will get one that already has the accutrigger.
It is possible to fit an Accutrigger to the Axis with not much work. If this is the route you want to go, I suggest checking out the popular Savage dedicated forum as there are plenty of threads discussing it in detail along with step by directions and photos.
What I meant was, if I was to buy a Savage I would buy a model with a accutrigger. I do agree with reynolds, I have a Hawkeye that I installed a Timney in..
Ironically, the same day I posted this, it was announced at the SHOT Show that the Axis will be offered with the Accutrigger, as the AXIS II later this spring. I just pulled up the Savage website, and it is there, in limited calibers for now and only as the XP package (optics included). MSRP is not listed, but according to word of mouth coming out of SHOT, it is expected to be about $40-$50 more than the regular Axis XP.
Too bad, I just bought a 308 Axis last week. If I had known this was coming out, I may have held off and bought the Axis II.
You must have a bad rifle, send it in for repair. There is no creep at all in the trigger and they break crisply with no hesitation at all. I have two with that trigger and find them great. Have Savage fix yours. You consider 3 lbs heavy? You do know they are adjustable?
I am with Jim243 here. I have a few with the accutrigger. Break very crisp and clean. My 6MMBR has the precision accutrigger. That one is real sweet. I have that one set to about 10 oz's
Notice I said my 2 Br triggers (the red ones) were fine. Not Jewel triggers by any means, but they will pass.
I never said the non-red ones were junk, I said they were creepy. Maybe my standards are too high. If I feel the trigger move before I feel the rifle begin to recoil, then I dont like the trigger.
