Savage Axis .22-250 @ 100 Yard

Mosin-Marauder

New member
Just loaded 5 rounds of .22-250 (first 5 I've ever reloaded for this caliber. Load was as follows:

Remington .22-250 Cases (once fired)
Hornady V-Max 55 Grain Flat Base
34 Grains of IMR 4064
Winchester WLR Primers

Out of my Savage Axis .22-250 with a Tasco 3-9x40 scope from Wally-World, At 100 meters.

Actual group was .5". Half MOA (:))
Flier was fouling shot/first shot of this load. I haven't cleaned it since I shot the last of those Remington factory loads. I don't think I will unless accuracy starts to fall off.

I think I got pretty lucky with this load and I'm thinking about keeping it unless I can somehow improve it.

Anyway, just thought I would show off my (first ever) sub-MOA group. :D

Thanks for reading, and as always suggesstions and advice are always appreciated and welcomed.

Regards,

-Mo.

The flyer looks more like something settling in then a cold bore shot. Could be due to cold bore. Id trend it and see if it's always the same or perhaps the rifle was pulled from the stock and replaced or the scope was just mounted etc.

You didn't say what the twist was on your Savage but I suspect it is 1:12. If so, it should have no problem with shooting 55 grain bullets accurately.

My 1:14 Remington 700 shoots 52 grain bullets more accurately than 55s and it also shoots 40 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips about as well as the 52s. The 40s seem to give the best results between 3900 and 3950 fps. Those hot little 40 grain BTs really do a job on prairie dogs - they are like grenades.

The best 25 loads shot so far average 0.325 with a variety of powders - all 52 and 53 grain bullets except for 2 loads with the 40 grain BTs. The 55s best load averages 0.471.
Most of my best loads are either with Reloader 15 or VV N140 powders.

My buddy's Savage 12 LPV has almost identical and very slightly better results with a 1:12 twist.

Gotta love them axis's! Another under-rated budget rifle that didn't get the message it can't shoot well. lol. Here's my 308 axis pushing 150 silver ballistic tips at 100 for around .3 MOA. I recently sold it to a friend who is a beginner hunter; needless to say I wish I had it back.

PS--that's a whit machine brake I put on--IMO it does nothing at all in terms of recoil or muzzle lift reduction, but since I had already lok-tited it down and painted over it I decided to leave it on--it doesn't seem to hurt anything at least.

Thanks for the responses guys! I think what I need mostly is more time shooting it, a better trigger is going to be my next upgrade aswell, after a new scope (Nikon Prostaff).
