Savage 99e?

I have an opportunity to acquire a Savage 99e .243 which is about 75%, I would judge (and I'm not an expert) with a Barrett(sp?) 3-9x30 scope.

Asking is < $ 400 and I think I can dicker a little.

Don't know the age or provenance. No damage to stock and has the lever safety and no round counter.

Should I?

You should 400 is a good price you won't be disappointed. If it is in good shape. How's the trigger?
 
I'm assuming you mean finish condition is 75%?

How is the mechanical condition?

If that is included in the 75%, I'd be leery.

Yes, finish condition, including furniture. Operational function appears good without any looseness or unusual movement, binding, etc. The rifling appears clean and sharp. I haven't, of course, fired a round through it and won't even try the trigger until/unless I'm ready to make an offer.

Well, I pulled the trigger on it, both literally and metaphorically.

Put it on layaway.

It has a 20" barrel and has no mark on the lever boss. The metal is in better shape then I remembered but the stock looks well-used. It is the model with the impressed "checkering".

Serial # is preceded by an "A" which, if plugged into the finder on savage99.com yields: "invalid serial number". If I plug in the number w/o the A, it comes back "...made in 1922.."

Serial # is: A242xxx

I'll probably pick it up next payday and take it out shooting.

Yes. I am assuming it was mf'd sometime after the lever-boss system was discontinued after 1970.

I haven't been able to find out when they began putting the alphabetical prefixes in. Right now, my best guess would have to be around 1971 or so.
