Savage 93r17 dilemna... Want accu-trigger and thumbhole!!!!!

I purchased my wood stock savage 93r17 with heavy barrel new about 8ish years ago (pre-accutrigger).

After getting more into longer distance accuracy I am finding the stock trigger is HORRID! Must be a solid 10-12 pound pull.

I am also in love with thumbhole stocks (look great and help me shoot tighter) and would like to upgrade.

To keep my existing rifle and get it where I want to be requires a boyds stock which is 99 bucks (plus they said there is a charge to fit the older 93r17, as I think the action hole is slightly larger) I think I also need the new trigger guard and and bottom plate (unless I dont because I have the wood stock now and can transfer?) So cost here is 130-150 from boyds.

To modify the trigger I have read online there are two options:
1) rifle basix sear/trigger setup. About 100 bucks and solves the problem (although in my reading online some people said they could NOT get it to setup right and it would fire accidentally)

2) some people talk about shimming various areas of the stock setup to get a smother/shorther and lightened pull. I am pretty mechanically inclined (never with firearms but same principles as automotive) so I dont see a problem shimming the 1-2 places people were mentioning IF That solves the problem.

Option 2 is to sell my current rifle and buy a new savage 17 with thumbhole + accutrigger.

Any idea what my rifle is worth? It has only had about 200 rounds through it and is in mint shape. I am considering taking it to a local gunshop to see what they will do on an offer or a trade up.

I have found heavy barrel accu-trigger thumbhole savage 17's on gunbroker for about 350. If I am only going to get 100 for my rifle I may as well upgrade my current one...but if I can get 200 it might be easier to just get a new rifle.

I really like the 17hmr round but have also considered jumping up to a .223. Reason being is I kind of want to start coyote hunting and on top of being a better coyote round, the .223 is a little better for anything 150+ yards in my experience. I like .223 because its powerful and pretty cheap. I considered all kinds of higher power rounds (270, 7mm, .308 .30-06 etc etc etc but the rounds are .50 cents to 1 dollar per round!!!)

I currently have a ruger 10/22 for plinking and squirrels.

One thing I did notice was at my local gander mountain last week they had a thumbhole stainless savage iii (or is it 111?) in 30-06 for 550 on sale (down from 800). Should I look into a higher end gun like that chambered in something like .223 or larger?

I do hope to eventually go on a big game hunting trip in montana/canada but not sure I can really cross reference a coyote round and a black bear round in the same gun? Not sure if I should stick with the trusty 17 and worry about a bigger gun later or just spend the extra couple bucks and get the bigger/better gun now.

Any thoughts?

Welcome aboard rOOst!

I own a 93R17 accutrigger regular stock Savage. It shoots really great. As for your dilemma. I may be in a different financial position than you. But I would buy the new thumbhole/acc.trigger model and shoot it first to be sure it is exactly what I wanted. Then sell off the first rifle if all is well. You may decide to keep both.
Most places that I have tried to trade up with have not offered as much for trade as I could get selling outright privately. If you are like most of us, somewhere down the road you will be buying and selling to satisfy the latest need or want in firearms. Might as well get your feet wet now.
As for modfying the stock trigger. What if the attempt to lighten the pull does not go well. You will have to pay to have it fixed. More cost to try and get what you can buy already on the factory thumbhole model.
You have a 10/22 to plink with. The .223 or larger sounds like a great idea. More choices for hunting or range time. It is always fun to try and decide what rifle, caliber and scope combination to try next. Never enough toys. :D

Hello! I think I would keep the rifle and buy new. Some day use the old for a swap between buddies, etc.
