I'm thinking about getting a long gun for bench rest shooting and Michigan whitetail deer.

1)I've been told that the 7mm-08 is a good round for both, what do you guys think?

2)Savage has been talked up to me as a good gun at a good price, anybody think this is wrong?

3)What Savage model would you guys recomend?
THANKS.

For benchrest competition, the 7/08 won't cut it. Maybe for plinking or informal target competition, but when you look at the match reports, you see the 6PPC, the .22PPC variants, and the occasional .222 or 6BR.

If you want a deer rifle that you'll be using as a target rifle, I'd go with the .308. Savage makes darn fine rifles.

The 7-08 earned its reputation in the game of sillohets (sp?). It makes a very good deer rifle and can be loaded to good accuraccy. Recoil is less than a .308. I am a fan of the long heavy bullets.

I'd guess that 95% or more of comments on the Savage rifles has been favorable. The caveat is that the stock trigger needs help, but it's easily made right by a competent gunsmith.

A rifle for competition in benchrest shooting is a whole 'nother ballgame, if you want to be able to "play with the big boys". Expensive.

If you park a vehicle somewhere and then walk no more than a mile or so to a deer stand, a heavy-barrelled rifle won't hurt you. By and large, heavy barrels give better groups for a five- or ten-shot string.

Purely opinion, but I see no reason why a 7mm-08 wouldn't provide extremely tight groups comparable to a .308. If they are not now being obtained, I would guess that it's a lack of R&D among shooters. The case is efficient, the bullets are good--but who knows what combination of powder type and charge would do the best?

I just picked up a Remington Model Seven SS in 7mm-08. I'm having some work on the stock done so I haven't shot it yet but using an external ballistics program it is actually one impressive little round. I would not hesitate to shoot an elk out to 300 yards with it using a 140 gr. BarnesX copper solid. Speer also makes a 145 gr. SPBT with a BC of 0.502, good for shooting paper or whitetails.
