Savage 340C ejection problem. HELP!!!

I have a Savage 340C(carbine) in 30-30 Win that is all original. Im having problems with some of the cases sticking in the chamber after its fired. I open and go to pull the bolt back and it wont pull the fired case from chamber. The shell extractor seems to be in ok shape and I also inspected the chamber and it seems fine with no erosion. Their getting stuck enough to where I have to knock it out with a cleaning rod. Its not happening on every round but enough to concern me that I put it away till its fixed. The cartridges used are Winchester and Hornady factory ammo and not reloads. Any ideas of whats wrong???
 
When you have to use the rod to push them out, does it require any force? If so, then I would suspect one of two things. Either the chamber is dirty or you have a headspace issue. Closely examine the spent shell. Does it show any sign at all of bulging or splitting? If so, get it to a gunsmith to get the headspace checked. If not, make yourself a bore cleaner by taking a brass bore brush the size of your 30-30 shell (off hand, I don't know what caliber/gauge that would be) and trimming the nose bristles to the size and shape of your necked down shell. Use a good solvent like Kroll and clean the devil out of the chamber.
 
It takes about 1- 5lbs of force. The chamber is clean and the gun in question is always taken care of and its not shot alot. I got it a while ago from an oldtimer I know and trust and he said it hasnt been shot more than 100 times. I have put another 100 thru it. Its just weird that some get stuck and some dont. It almost feels like their expanding in the chamber causing them to hang up in there. When I inspected the shells, They looked normal.
 
If you had access to a micrometer, I'd like to see if there were any differences in measurement of two spent shells - one that stuck and one that didn't.
 
Doyle, I would like to do that but I tossed the cases at the range and didnt think about it at the time because I was $%^&$ off and just packed it back up and left. I dont want to fire this thing again till its resolved. I guess its gotta go to the smitty and see whats up.

The thing that got me interested in this thread is that I too have a Savage 340C. Mine is chambered in .22 Hornet and I'm getting ready to put it up for sale. It's missing the ejector, but it still shoots and extracts just fine - you just have to roll the rifle over to eject the spent casing.
 
extractor

i would suspect the extractor. it is basically a clip of spring steel. if it is cracked or slightly sprung you may not notice while it is in the relaxed state. especially check the part which runs over the top of the bolt. also you should have a claw on each side of the bolt. remove the bolt and slide a shell onto the face and pull inline with the bolt.
 
The extractor is ok but it still shouldnt take any force to get a fired casing to extract from the chamber. Doyle, You can still get them. Numrichs has them sometimes. If and when you sell it, let me know. I love the old 340C's. Thanks.
