Savage 29?

I recently acquired what I am fairly (no really at all) certain is a Savage 29 sold by Sears and marked "Ranger" on the left side of the receiver.

It has a 23.5" octagon barrel, tapered and ringed forearm, plain butt stock and a large takedown finger screw on the right side of the receiver. There is a single serial number stamped on the front, left corner of the underside of the receiver. No model numbers or other serial numbers inside, on the barrel or under the butt plate. The numbers 5 and 0 appear under the butt plate along with the name of a former owner scratched in the wood (kinda cool).

I guess I'm just looking for some confirmation I'm right or some guidance if I'm wrong. I know I'm missing parts and want to make sure to order correctly. I also know the wood was painted black in the late 1950's by my Dad.

Tried to attach a couple of pics but it failed. Will try that again later.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Sorry for the missed info there. I was trying to be as descriptive as I can because I couldn't get pics to load and forgot one of the primary pieces.

The gun is a 22 S, L, LR.

Pic links below.

Again, thanks in advance. Be great to get this little gun shooting again. I'm told it was a tack driver back in it's day.

Everybody and his brother used 'Ranger' for a model name. The only actual Savage using it was a Model 238, that's likely a Stevens. No Savage M29 listed under Sears on Gunparts' Cross Reference page. Doesn't mean they didn't sell it, just that it wasn't sold under their brand name.
However, there are references on-line to the 29 having an octagonal barrel only until 1940.
Gunparts does list some parts. There's a 29, 29A and B too. Don't know how much that'd matter.

Savage 29

Got one in junk rack minus barrel. Think it was 29B, magazine in front of trigger
guard instead of tube mag.

I'm pretty sure what you have is a store brand (maybe Montgomery Wards?) version of the Savage M1914. The go-to guy for any old Savage rifle is Sav22 over at the Rimfirecentral forum. I'm quite sure he can tell you all about it, and might know where you can find any parts you need. Good luck with it. It looks like it just needs some TLC.

Thanks to all of you guys for your info. It's going to be a good time researching and tinkering with this old rifle.

Thanks again.
