Savage 24S-A

Not sure if i'm putting this in the right area but here goes.

Does anyone know anything about the Savage 24S-A, its a 22Lr over .410.

i have found some info but nothing seems to match what i have acquired.

It has a high gloss, beautiful walnut stock, Deep bright blueing, and a case hardened receiver. Everything i seem to come up with has them all as plain black. Most pictures i see have the action release on the tang like a modern O/U, this is on the side of the receiver. overall condition is Like New.

Any idea when this was made, and any other additional info would be great.

Savage made a lot of variations on the 24. There are deluxe models with walnut furniture and nickeled receivers, plain wood with case coloring and at least three different ways of opening the action that I can think of (top tang, side lever, front button). Check out:

It's been a long time since I had one of these, a .222 over 20 gauge, but I think this is correct:
The switch on the side of the receiver is, if memory serves, the barrel selection switch, with the lever to open the action on the tang, up top.
If so, it is an early model.
Later ones had the barrel selection as part of the hammer.
How early depends on the serial number, if it has one.
They were first made as .22 over .410, and marketed under the Savage Stevens name, in the 1940s.
With the side selector, just guessing, it could be from then up to the early 1960s.

The "S" in your gun's model number (24-S) denotes it as having the side-mounted opening lever, as opposed to the top-mounted opening lever.

They were made from 1964 through 1971, but every year except for 1971 manufacture should have a circled Savage Date Code letter stamped into the receiver and/or barrel bottom in a hidden area.

The codes are on the FAQ section of the savage24.com forum, but the letters started in 1949 with "A", skipping "I", "J", & "O" for obvious reasons.

IIRC, the letters ended in 1970 (X).

More info on the side selector:
An old book says that the first version had the selector on the right side.
After 1962, it was on the left, until the 1970s, when it migrated up to the hammer.
