Savage 24C Question

I recently inherited a Savage 24C Type P .22lr over 20ga. When I tip the barrel end down with the action open, the shotgun firing pin protrudes out of the receiver slightly. Tip it back and it returns back into the receiver. Appears to be freefloating. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. The rifle firing pin has a spring, the shotgun firing pin has none. Shoot away.

Thanks for the help. I reviewed more than a few Firearm Assembly drawings of the 24C and about half showed only a spring for the rifle firing pin and the others showed a spring for both. Most drawings applied to more than one model however and that may be the difference.
