Savage 24 O/U 22Mag/20ga - can it be scoped?

I found a Savage 24 in 22mag/20ga config for $180 and it seems to be a great deal. I have not had a chance to look at the gun myself and don't know a lot about it other than it has been well reviewed over the years. I would really like to be able to shoot the 22mag scoped, if that is possible.

Does anyone know if it is possible with this gun and does/would the scope greatly hinder the sighting/aiming of the shotgun?

That was a great deal. Most 22 mag / 20s have grooves for rimfire rings. They will work fine for shooting the 22 mag. The rings may have problems remaining in place if you subject them to 20 ga recoil and a scope will hinder any attempt at wingshooting.

If the .22 mag barrel is grooved for rings, yes, the gun can be scoped easily. BKL makes the best mount for this:

The six clamp screws do the job and hold up to the recoil of the 20 gauge, especially if you leave the rear sight in place and slide the mount up against it so it serves as a recoil stop. I have a Leupold 1-4X mounted on my Savage 24 .22 mag / 20 and it has worked well. You can't use the the iron sights, though. However, with the scope cranked down to 1x, I have no trouble just sighting through the scope when using the shotgun.

Here's an old thread over at TheHighRoad that has a couple of pics of my setup:

Oh, and $180 is a steal if the gun is in any reasonable condition at all.

Which model. The V and F models are indeed drilled and tapped for a scope. The other models aren't and require either a clamp-on mount or need to be drilled and tapped by a gunsmith.

Legionnaire, appreciated !!

Have never seen this mount and looks to be a great solution to an old problem with these 24's. Also appreciate his setup and input. .... :)
I do not know what model you got but some came with a monticarlo stye stock that has the higher comb and easier to sight through a scope.

By the way, these 24's are great littlle combination guns. These are pressed into service on our winter snow bunny, hunts. I have never seen a 24 that did not have some kind of a problem. ....

Be Safe !!!

I had one through most of the '60s and never had a problem. I bought it new, a .22WMR/.410. Maybe I was just lucky.

I have had a couple of the Savage O/U and I would suggest you test fire both barrels using the iron sights before you put a scope on it. Neither of the O/U's I had shot the shotgun barrel to the same place the rifle barrel shot. Aligning O/U barrels can be a very tough fight and my experience is that a scope just compounds the problem.

I just bought the same arm and, as it was unfired despite being pre '68, was twice as much. The .22 Mag/20 gauge seems the most ideal all-purpose version and I had always been intrigued and wanted one, even when they were less than $100. But then they were a "cheap joke" so my friends and I would never buy 'em back then...

The gun says right on it: do NOT use a scope with the 20 ga. shotgun! U r likely to get hurt.

The scope cut look way too narrow for .22 feet. I dunno -- I never tried a scope...

My Savage 24F is scoped. But then, I keep it for one purpose and one purpose only. I have a 12ga over .22 hornet. I have a see-through mount with the scope sighted for the rifle at 100 yds and the iron sights zeroing the shotgun pattern at about 35 yds.

This is my turkey gun. Here in Fl, you can use a rifle for turkey (except on certain WMA's). Plus, you never know when a hog or coyote is going to step out. Having the .22 hornet means I can reach out to about 100 yds for a turkey or coyote or a little less for an ear-shot on a hog.

me too

I have never seen a M24 that has not been beat to death. Barn guns, truck guns, canoe guns.

Always wanted one myself, lots of fellas had'em when I was a teen.
