Savage .22

Hi folks-

I have a Savage Sporter .22 and I'm trying to figure out what model it is and roughly how old it is.

It's a bolt-action with a 5-shot magazine. The barrel is 23" long. Along the top it says:

Manufactured by Savage Arms Corp Utica NY USA
Patented Nov 28 1905, Sep 7 1915, Sep 4 1917, Nov 20 1917

and then to the right of that in larger letters

Sporter

It says "22 Long Rifle" on the left side of the barrel back near the breech with what appears to be a serial number of "48829" on the right side. There is a metal plate on the butt affixed with two screws. The safety is operated by the thumb: when disengaged the word "Fire" appears on a metal tab on the left side; when engaged this tab moves down into the stock to reveal the word "Safe" stamped on the barrel. There are no other visible markings.

From the description on the receiver, and the photograph,
It would appear that the rifle is the Savage Model 23A Sporter,
however, has the target stock from the Savage Model 19, Model 1933 NRA.

The original Model 23A Sporter came with open rear sights with a blade front sight. From your photograph the scope was added at a later time.

The Model 19 came with a peep rear sight and a blade front sight, with later models with an extension rear sight and hooded front sight.

The barreled action being mfg'd frm 1923--1933 and the stock from 1919-1933.

Furthering my research, I found the attached in Gun Parts catalog and it is very interesting concerning both the 19 & th 23 Sporter.

Serial #125,000 to 127000 is the 23A sporter

Serial E25,000 to 45000 in the Model 19NRA.

This indicates to me that the bbl action is one in the same and that it will fit the sporter and theN NRA model. Look at your serial nuimber and that will tell you what you have.

Mine is #48829 I'm pretty sure...which happens to fall in the void between your two lists. :)

I'll dbl. check it again when I get home from work.

If I wanted to try and find a spare magazine, could you suggest a source? My current magazine appears to be the same as the one shown in the catalog.
 
To bring up the numbers, take a #2 graphic pencil, collor over the numbers and this should make them read able.

It's definately Serial No. 48829.

Do I understand correctly that either of the following gunparts.com magazines should work? The magazine I have now is a 5 round.

I believe I have the same rifle, serial # 84180, it's the same as described except mine has two screws at the rear on the left hand side of the barrel extension just in front of the safe and extend out about 1/8 inch, apparently they attached something to the barrel i.e. the peep sight you talked about. The rifle is equipped with open rear sights and a blade front sight. Also there are two screws on top of the barrell extension on top of the bolt. I tried to look at the pics, yours are not there or a link but when I clicked on R. PRISM’S the picture a page comes up telling me I have to un lock it, which I do not have a clue. If need be I can send you a pic of mine. I am missing the stock and the magazine.
