savage 22 opinions

hey im thinking of purchasing a savage 22lr rifle that is at walmart for like 140 bucks. before that i was thinkin of a ruger 10-22. This would be mainly to teach the daughter to shoot and possibly squirrel hunting
 
I went all out and ordered a savage MKII TR which I'm very happy with despite costing $400. a ruger 10/22 is hard to beat and the aftermarket support is amazing. are you asking about the bolt-action MKII or the semi auto model 64?
 
Depends on what you want. Is it the savage bolt action MKII? If it is and thats what you want I have one and its a good rifle. I also have 2 10/22's and they are better guns by far. Both are accurate and reliable.
 
If you want a bolt action go with the savage. If you want a semi auto the 10/22 is better and you have tons of options on upgrades and aftermarket parts.
 
Bamashooter is right

I had a buddy with the Savage automatic. It was very cheap. It shot OK, but was just really cheezy, the way he had to push in on the bolt handle to lock it back.

The Ruger 10/22 is also not that great to lock back.

The Marlin 60 is the best bet, IMO, for an automatic 22. I think their bolt guns are nicer than Savages in 22 too.

Expand your search outside of Walmart.

Another thing about the Savages is that all they have are the box magazines that stick out the bottom of the stock, right where you may want to rest the gun some day, while the 10/22 and Marlin 60 do not.
 
hey smaug thanks for the input i am definitely leaning towards the ruger by now. i have looked outside of walmart it was there though that i noticed the savage. i started out wanting the ruger then seen the savage was 100 bucks cheaper. if i had it my way(besides the wifes way) i would get the colt ar22. ahhhh maybe one day. hell she kept me from buying a remington 870 for 50 bucks more than my mossberg 500
 
I purchaced a savage semi auto Mod 64 from Walmart in late September of last year for my youngest daughter. It is a decent rifle and quite accurate. My 9 yr old daughter does quite well with it with the exception of loading the clip style magazine. The spring inside is a bit stiff and dificult for her to load. I leave the magazine loaded fully and stored in the lock safe. It is slowly getting easier to load as the spring softens. I also purchaced a spare magazine and it is kept loaded too.
 
Everybody raves about their savages. Must be something to that applause I guess. I can tell you it is NOT the quality of the finish or the $3 sights they slap on them. Sure as hell isnt the afterthought magazine that protrudes awkwardly.
The rules of life still apply. You want a cheap rifle? Fine. Buy the savage 22. You want something better, that's great. Look anywhere except the gunshow I visited today. $3200.00 nylon 66's? I don't think so.
 
A 10/22 with TRS100 Tech-sights is one of the best basic rimfire setups I can think of.

Nothing against Savage, I'm just a Ruger 10/22 fan.
 
I just got a 10/22 and the cost doesn't stop there. I already have put another $70 dollars in it. It comes with a terrible trigger. So I bought a new target hammer for it and some other goodies.

Wish I would have waited for a Marlin 60 to come in, I would have saved alot of money.
 
I am Die Hard Savage all the way,But i got to tell ya,Those 10/22 ( i have 2) are the cats meow.Accurate as all get out and options only beat by Harley Davidson.:D
