I just won a savage 12 with fluted barrel and thumb holed stock , it is a very nice shooting rifle. I was just wondering if anyone has any info on this gun . it is a 223 caliber just wondering if there is a good load for shooting deer with this gun . thanks.

Well that depends on the state in which you want to hunt deer. In Missouri and several other states the .223 can not be used to hunt deer.

If you want to use it for hunting deer, you need heavier bullets that are specifically designed for hunting deer. I'm pretty sure you have a 1-9 twist, so you probably want a bullet in the 62-69 grain range.

Shot placement will be absolutely critical. I personally don't hunt deer with a .223 and don't recommend you do it, but with proper shot placement, many deer have fallen with a clean kill from .223.
