Savage 110 barrel swap?

Ive been looking for something online for custom savage 110 barrels and have yet to find what i want. does anybody know of a website.:confused:

Oh, and what caliber should i swap to, i have 30-06. want something with less recoil, fast and accurate,suggestions?

As far as calibers I would suggest .25-06 or .270 win. All you will need to do is change the barrel and get the head space right.

Are you looking for recommendations on which barrel to use or a how-to to help you get started?

youtube has some decent videos on the subject, but I would recommend Savage Shooters also. I think it's a $12 joining fee, but I would feel safer that the information is correct and not dangerous. Not to say all people or even most people on youtube are wrong, but you know... savage shooters is a dedicated forum.

If you were looking for a brand name, talk to Northland SHooters Supply on Savage SHooters and he can get you a mcgowen barrel for like $270 or something.
 
I know how to swap barrels Ive done it before,Ii just wondered if any of you guys knew a good website to buy custom barrels on, I'm willing swap the bold head so now what caliber should i get, thinking around .20-.25 cal. Any ideas?
 
Yeah, definitely give NSS (Jim is his name) a call from Savageshooters.com about the McGowen. He also sells Shilen barrels which would be another great option, just more expensive.
 
Sounds like a cool project, Dont know much to help you with recoil, You will need to stay with a cartridge with the same size head as a 3006, such as the 270 25 06 6mm 06 8mm 06 35 whelan and so forth they all have pretty substantial recoil.
A good quality recoil pad would really reduce recoil.
Any how, good luck. It would be neat if you could re chamber for something cool like the 6.5 lepua, but for that you would have to modify the bolt, and magazine as well.
 
What are you wanting to do with it? you are leaving a lot of variables. .If you reload there are many more. .257 Roberts and .250 Savage are great calibers for deer sized game along with the .25-06. .220 swift and .22-250 are great varmint rounds.
 
Dont know what you want to do with it, so its hard to recomend a caliber. I shoot long range NRA matches with my 110. I re-barreled a 30'-06 into a .260 Rem. There are a few out there that you can order your chambered, ready to screw on barrel from, like PacNor. I have went through a few barrels from them and they shot well. I recently orderd a Brux from http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/ but havent received it yet.

The .260 Rem is a very good caliber (6.5mm), lots of bullet selections, and a lot longer barrel life than the 6.5-284, and not much recoil.

I've ordered from shaw before. Outstanding company IMO. I can attest that their barrels will hold .5moa on the proper rifle if you do your part. Plus they are pretty cheap to own. 180 bucks gets you a custom barrel, built to your specs, shipped to your door. Further, clink on the specials link. It may not be what you're looking for, but if it is you get a NICE barrel for 65 bucks.

As for caliber... I recommend something that will make good use of that long action. .25-06 is a good start, .270 isn't a bad choice... it just depends on what you're doing with it.
 
Midway has complete kits with all you need to do it yourself. The ER Shaw .270 Win kit comes with a barrel nut wrench, gages, and anti-sieze to put it all toghther again. Should be able to put yourself together a hunting accurate rifle in no time.

You can put run any cartridge based off of the 7x57, .30-06 or .308 case as well as a couple others mainly the .22-250 Rem, .250 and .300 Savage. If you want to go down to a .223 sized case you will have to change out the bolt face and the magazine to get it done.

Sounds like you don't reload yet so top of my list of fast, accurate, and less recoil than the .30-06 would be the .270 and .243 Winchester. All are common, and have a ton of ammunition choices and will be cheaper than some of the others that you could do like the .25-06, .260, 7mm-08, or .280. Another option would be the .308 Win while not as fast as the .30-06 it is accurate and does provide a little less recoil and there is tons of cheap ammuntition to shoot.
 
I second what Taylorce1 said above. You can't beat the value of the e.r. shaw kit for the savage 110. The .270's recoil is substantualy less than the .30-06 in my opinion so that would be a great choice for you. Not sure if they offer a .25-06 kit (they do stock the barrel at midway) but you may want to look into that as well. It would be a bit more money but you could get the go/no go guages and barrel nut wrench seperately if you needed to.

That is what my next barrel will be, and I have nothing to debate about with it!
 
can a long action marlin XL7 (25-06) be barrel swapped down to a short action caliber such as a .308 or 22-250? just curious because i just even-swapped a remington 770 (.270) for the above mentioned marlin. i think i got the better end of the deal...

Yes it can, but be careful some other member posted here on switching a barrel on a Marlin and ran into some problems. IIRC a Savage barrel is a close swap but not exact and he had some issues breaking an extractor. McGowen barrels will build you a pre-fit barrel for the new Marlin X series of bolt action rifles.
 
not really wanting to swap yet, just was keeping my options open. i was looking for a .243 when i found this 25-06. it was new so i figured i couldnt go wrong. i like the 30-06 but i have never fired a 25-06 or know anyone who has one.
 
Hey what is difference between the model 110 and 10. I am interested in the GXP which matches my Mark II. Both seem to be exactly the same. Any help for a dumbo plz ?

Get some 100 grain Remington ammunition and go shoot it. I think you will be surprised on how it performs for you. There isn't any real world difference between what it and the .243 can do on varmints and deer sized game. If you are wanting to long range target shoot the .243 offers better bullet options, but you would want to start with a different rifle than the Marlin.

Savage uses 3 digit number to designate a long action or .30-06 length. 2 digit numbers signify a short action or .308 length. The exception is the Stevens 200, same name but comes in two different action lengths but remember 06 based cartridges and Magnums come on a long action. .308 based rounds and the .204 and .22 calibers are short actions.

I was the one who tried to put a Savage barrel on a Marlin action. The thread describing it is here:

Now if you're just talking about putting a short action Marlin barrel on a long action Marlin receiver then that could be very easily done.

Why not a 257 Roberts? Get a Midway Savage barrel and have a machinist face it off for you like I did.

That was very very helpful ! 100% right the 110 had the bigger calibers (so I guess that;'s what the long action is for) and the 10 had the .308 and even .223 etc.... I am 90% + sold on .308 but nice to have options!

Now on the 10 FCM Scout, with the forward mounted scope mount, how accurate could this be longer range? Provided I put a quality scope on it, if I got it in .308 would I be able to take and/or make long range shots? Say I was comparing this to the Remington 700 SPS Varmint packge at my local Dick's for $500, I love the Scout but wonder the forward scope would be good for me or a detriment.

Also like the Precision Carbine cause of the accutstock, not many Savages sport their AccuStock it seems.

well so far the only money i have in the marlin is $30 for the background check and such. the 770 i traded was a gift and the guy blue booked the thing and told me with everything i had on it, (wally world bipod , sling and a 8-32X44 barska i had lying around) he'd even swap for the marlin. he gave me a box of 117gr federal power-shok. i think i came out on the upside.
