Savage 11 FXP3 Out of the box effort and report

A couple of weeks a go I might of mentioned that I was caliber downsizing from a Ruger M77 7 mag to what ended up being as a final choice a .243.

My hunting circumstances have changed, I'm getting older, and I just did not need a cannon any longer. My shots are shorter now due to hunting on my own property, and I just couldn't see taking a beating sighting in, which I came to hate as a chore. So after a lot of thread reading, and research, I decided on a Savage 11FXP3 with Accutrigger.

I ordered the gun from http://centerfiresystems.com/ and paid $441.00 total. I ordered it on a Thursday, and received it on a Monday. Just great service IMO.

Yes it is the "package" gun with the low grade Bushnell scope, I have a better scope if needed, but I figured I would just shoot it today, see how it shoots, get to know it, and I have time to change scopes before hunting season if needed.

I gave her a good cleaning, and checked my bore sighter against Savage's which turned out to be fairly close in adjustment.

I bought just some plain jane ammo for now, Winchester 100 gr Super X, and Remington 100 gr core-lokt, just to see what's up with the gun. I'll settle on a hunting round at a later date.

Today was my first chance to get to a 100 yard range and see what I got here at 100 yards. Also that glow target was stuck to a large piece of cardboard just in case I had accuracy issues at 100 yards.

My first 3 shots were about an inch right with the Winchester ammo, as you can see it was basically shooting 1 inch groups immediately. Shot 4 was the a little less right and slightly low, then the last 3 with the Super-X was in the holy grail.

So I left my scope alone and started shooting the Remington just to see how that shot. IMO it wasn't quite as accurate, but it could be a heating up barrel, but it wasn't no slouch either, other then me out and out pulling one(I'm left handed) a couple of inches to the left.

Overall the Accutrigger is very smooth and worth every penny, the gun is just what I needed, and will fit my needs well into to sunset years of hunting. My son bought the Ruger from me, so if I need it, I'm sure I can use it.

The manufacturers are doing magnificent things with rifles these days. We've got accuracy today that was unheard of thirty years ago in a bargain rifle.

I've got the same rifle and really enjoy it. I took a little spike buck with mine last year and was very pleased. I took him with a 100 grain Hornady soft point at about 150 yards. He walked about forty yards into the woods and lay down.

So that's what Savage is talking about. Accurate beyond the most demanding hunting situation requires. Inexpensive enough that you don't have to take a second on the house. In other words, a great gun at a great price. Amazing!

Yep, I was pretty happy and amazed at the out of the box accuracy. I've had some real sighting in horror stories through the years, but this was just a pleasure to shoot.

I also purchaced one of the "package" rifles in .243. I got mine at Wally World. The Simons scope came off right away and was replaced with a Bushnell 3x9x40 w/a Trophy scope. It has the very nice adjustable Accu-Trigger. Mine has never seen factory loads. I run a 100 gr Speer Grand Slam bullet. Super accuracy & hard hitter. Two years ago I had a buck peeking his head around a tree at me at a little over 100 yds-paced. Free hand I nailed him and blew his ENTIRE lower jaw off....and that was kinda bazarre I will tell ya.

Oh I just have to continue on this rifle. This might just be the best low cost - super accuracy rifle out there right now. As I do on all of my newly aqquired firearms I took it down even bolt dis-assembly. Cleaned the factory crud and lubed it up. The synthetic stock free floats the barrel nicely. I did torque the action screws to synthetic stock specs with an inch pound torque wrench. And then you mess with the adjustment on the Accu- Trigger to find what you like for pull. I have around 350/ 400 rounds through this little cheap rifle and feel the trigger gets even better with use. Zero problems with it. Besides hunting it is SO fun at the range. GIT ONE !

LOL, it is a joy to shoot. Handled very well and I felt in control. The trigger is beautiful, I don't really see the need to adjust it.

The low grade Bushnell scope is a Simmons, last I heard.
Savage has always been known for excellent out-of-the-box accuracy.
"...get serious on a deer load..." Speer 105 grain SP's work well out of my old Cooey. IMR4350.

I agree, like I said I hunt my own property now and really my longest shot is about 50 yards max. A 4x is just about right.
