Savage 10?

Ok so I've decided on caliber, manufacturer, and action. I want a Savage bolt action .308, under $1,000. However, I am having a lot of trouble deciding which one. I have seen a lot of recommendations for the "Savage 10", but when I look at their website I see 16 different guns with model 10 in the name, spanning several "categories" of rifles. The most populous being the Law Enforcement category.

Which gun are people referring to when they say Savage 10? Any of them? The 10 FCP-K seems nice, it has the AccuStock (not sold on this, but if it has it ok).

I also really like the model 11 Hunter series, specifically the 11/111 BTH (wood laminate with thumbhole stock). It has 2" less barrel and is a bit less expensive, plus I love the looks of it.

Can anyone help me make sense of all of Savage's offerings?

Purpose will be mainly long range precision shooting, don't anticipate ever shooting it at anything other than paper.

Think of it in terms of short action. As I understand it, all model 10,11,14 and 16's are short action (.308, .223 and the like). The long actions are 110, 111, 114 and 116, (.270, 30-06, 7mm Mag and the like). Not sure if this answers you question, but I hope it helps.

In addition to the action codes mentioned above;

AK -Adjustable Muzzle Brake
B -Laminate Stock
C -Clip (Detachable Box Mag.)
F -Synthetic Stock
G -Hardwood Stock
L -Left Hand
LE -Law Enforcement
ML -Muzzleloader
NS -No Sights
P -Police
SE -Safari Express
SS -Stainless Steel
U -Ultra High Lustre
V -Long Range (Heavy Barrel)
XP -Package Gun
Y -Youth

Example - Model 111FLC
F = Synthetic Stock
L = Left Hand
C = Clip

You see a lot of recommendations for the 10 series because it is a short action with a heavy barrel that people have trended towards. Lots of reasons people like them, accuracy, balance/weight a little forward, looks, price etc. Great rifles for the money none the less.

My neighbor has the 10FP and I have the 10PC. Both guns are accurate as you can ask for in a production rilfe. Mine has a 20" barrel as opposed to his 24" barrel, but mine is a hair more accurate while his is a hair faster shooting the same load.

Yup, when we say Savage 10, that's a verbal shorthand for a short action, blue steel Savage rifle. Lots of individual models are covered under that broad tent.

If we're talking about a short action stainless model, that's a Model 16. Lots of acreage under that tent as well. tobnpr has detailed most of the common model variations of the line, but for shorthand, we just call them Savage 10.

Nope. They're all the exact same action.
I recently bought my son an 11 Hunter in .308, and was going to put a match varmint barrel on it for our long range shooting.

But, the factory contour barrel has shot far better than I anticipated...and we've yet to re-barrel it.

Main thing to consider when buying a Savage in whatever flavor you prefer is the stock...
We weren't going to keep the factory stock, so it didn't make sense to go with the more expensive AccuStock. We got the cheap plastic stock model, and put the action in a Choate tactical stock.

Some guys like the AccuStock, some don't...do your research and decide which way you're going to go...

Take a look at the Law Enforcement series if you are going to be shooting at a range rather than hunting.

The model 10 FPC-K is a really nice rifle with accu-stock and accu-trigger and a heavy barrel. The muzzle brake actually keeps the barrel down after the shot so you can get back on target quicker. It sounds like a gimmick but it works, even on the .223 version.

I have a 10 FP and it was very accurate out of the box even without the accu-stock but the accu-stock is slightly more rigid and should be even more accurate. I have not had to do any tuning like stock changes to improve the accuracy even though I think the regular stock might be more rigid.

The FP and FPC-k are heavier than the normal hunting rifle but the barrels won't heat up as much as a hunting barrel so you don't spend most of your range time waiting for your barrel to cool.

My Savage 10FCP with Choate tactical stock. Around $750 including tax. Wears a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44 scope and Harris Benchrest Bi-pod.

Both rifles are very good shooters,You can't go wrong with a Savage.

I've more or less decided on the 10 FCP-K. However they are impossible to come by. My buddy called Savage and was told they are trying to win a DoD sniper contract so they've stopped shipping the FCP-K.

I suppose the FP-SR is a possibility if I swapped out the stock myself. It's a couple hundred dollars less which gives me money to work with. 2" less barrel length though. I like that stock you both linked; looks like its $270 on their site, so that's about the same price as the FCP-K and I end up with a threaded barrel.

Edit: Looks like the availability problems might extend to the FP-SR too. I'll have to start haunting my LGS' to see if I can find one used.

I'd swap out the stock with the money saved vs. the FCP-K. I like the looks of those Choate tacticals, looks like they are $270 on their site.

Local guy with great prices says he can get an FP-SR in. Waiting to hear back on the price.

We have a Savage .308 in the Choate tactical. I like the stock. Heavy mutha, but fine for bench or prone shooting. Street price is about $220.
