So I won in a raffle for $20.00 :-) a very,very lightly used Savage 10 BA 308 with the aluminum AccuStock. I'm not sure if it was ever shot by the owner, the paperwork was still sealed in a plastic bag. A Really sweet rifle that shoots very well!
My question is:
Is the factory muzzle brake supposed to be installed with the vents straight up and down? This one is canted a little but seems to have no effect on the performance of the rifle.
Maybe the original owner removed it and replaced it timed incorrectly?
Could Savage have purposely installed it with a slight cant?
It does have a washer between it and the barrel.

Brakes are typically vented horizontally for felt recoil reduction, some with additional top porting to mitigate muzzle rise. Yours has (apparently, pic would help) been over torqued on the crush washer.

Get a new crush washer to time the brake correctly, or a smith can set back the shoulder as needed to clock the brake correctly without a crush washer. There are also washer "kits" with precision ground washers that can be used in lieu of a crush washer.
 
Thanks for the response. I just put a wrench on it and it did indeed turn until it was tight. The vents were not canted after this. It does have the steel factory washer, not a crush washer.

Be sure to keep an eye on the brake to be sure it doesn't loosen. Often they can work as intended when re-used on the same device, but they're cheap enough to just replace once they've been loosened or removed. Provided you were able to tighten to about 20-30 ft lbs or so without overclocking it should be fine. Red loctite or Rocksett also can't hurt, but usually isn't necessary in my experience provided the threads on both are good Class 3 fit.
 
This one is a 10BA LE. All 13.7lbs of it!
The owners manual shows a brake but I am not the original owner.
I did find some Magpul magazines that after a little file work seem to work just fine. It was very apparent where they were making contact with the receiver and needed massaging;). Much more affordable than the factory $100.00 magazines.:eek:

I have yet to run across a bad Magull.

AK47 has always been iffy for aftermarket and plastic worse, Magpul nailed that one.
 
You generally want your rifle blast vertically or at 3,12, and 9 oclock (3 port brake). Reason for this is if you are shooting prone in the dry dusty dirt you won't get a big blinding dirt blast. Have fun with the new 10BA, I have a 12FTR and I prefer the overall rifle over my R700's.
 
Pretty amazing how well Savage has turned their company around. I have an old 80's vintage 110E .223 that has always been a tack driver. Bought it for just over $200 brand new. Great little rifle. Got me a new metal trigger guard for it a while back to replace the original plastic one.
