Saturday was a great day!

I took another young lady to the range Saturday morning,,,
She is a student at my university and an employee at my watering hole.

Last Wednesday she mentioned she wanted to learn to shoot,,,
And how her father said she just needs a .22 because she's so little.

I pshawed at that statement,,,
Then offered to take her Saturday morning,,,
So we met at her workplace parking lot at 10:00 am.

She had never fired a gun of any kind,,,
So I started her off very simply,,,
With a Colt Frontier Scout .22.

I did want to dispel that myth that she couldn't handle a larger gun,,,
So I started her off with a .22 but went up in increments.

Colt frontier scout in .22
S&W 34 snubby in .22 LR
S&W 36 snubby in .38 Special
S&W 36 3" barrel in .38 Special
S&W 686 6" barrel in .357 Magnum
S&W 629 6" barrel in .44 Magnum
Ruger SR22 in .22 LR
Taurus 22-PLY in .22 LR
Taurus 25-PLY in .25 ACP
Bersa Thunder 380 in .380 ACP
Ruger LC9 in 9mm.

Except for the .44 Magnum at three rounds,,,
She fired at least a full cylinder of all the revolvers.

Strangely enough the one she liked best was the S&W 686,,,
She was hitting the 3" bulls eye at 7 yards almost every shot with it.

But the gun she really liked was the Ruger SR22,,,
It was a perfect fit for her small hands,,,
She cut a small hole in the bulls eye.

She was also very fond of the Ruger LC9,,,
The recoil didn't bother her at all,,,
And she hit very well with it.

So here's the picture I made for her dad.

So much for her only being able to handle a .22 pistol. :D

My other steady range buddy is graduating this semester,,,
She's the young lady who just took the safety class for her carry permit.

This young lady is (I hope) going to be her replacement,,,
She said she had a great time and wants to go again.

As long as the enthusiasm is there,,,
I'll pony up for the ammo.

P.S. The other part of the great day was that when I dropped her off,,,
I decided to go into the restaurant bar for a beer and lunch,,,
I had completely forgotten the OU vs OSU Bedlam Game.

OSU beat OU in overtime,,,
What an exciting game it was.

Go Pokes!

When I was young and handsome 40 years ago, girls would go shooting with me, go fishing with me, they just hung around.

Now that I am old and ugly, I shoot by myself.
The best I can do with pretty young ladies like that is, say something funny and the girl will laugh and smile.

Hey, I'm no spring chicken either,,,

Hey, I'm no spring chicken either,,,
I'm a pot-bellied old phart at 63 years of age.

But I do work in an environment where I meet a ton of undergrads,,,
Since my gun ownership and shooting is 95% recreational,,,
I simply invite lots of the kids to the range.

Honestly, I can't think of a better use for my guns,,,
Than to try and sponsor some interest in the young folk.

I probably dropped 35-40 bucks in ammo this trip,,,
But I consider it to be money that was very well spent.

It's the cycle of life around a university,,,
Cortney graduates and leaves,,,
Grace starts her interest.

Life is good! ;)

Idgie after a movie character.

Fried Green Tomatoes. Fine flick.

I have two daughters, and several of their friends have gone to the range for the first time with 'ol Doc. I agree entirely with you that it is money well spent when I have done so. Seeing young folk learn and respond to teaching can be quite satisfying, and it is even more so when the subject is something we enjoy.

Sounds like a great plan. My Dad used to be the old phart doing that when people came over. I am sure he is looking down with a smile as I do the same now.

Just took my cousin out and she shot a .38 and .357 and a few others. The only one that was a bit much was the .357 magnum in a nice big S&W revolver. I don't know what loads my Dad had in some of those rounds, but they packed a punch!

Keep up the good practices as there are less and less of you around.

p.s.
And I was confused on the names too, but figured it out. Not sure about naming guns (like naming cars I guess). But to each his own. Name or not, the gun will still work.
