Satisfy my curiosity (and ignorance). Lyman's 49th front cover.

I have this reloading manual and on its cover are 10 beautifully polished and, on occasion, crimped cartridges. 6 bottle-necked and 4 straight-walled.

But what are they?!

I think the blue-tipped bottle-neck is either x39 or 300AC. I'm making a guess at the red-tipped bottle-neck lying down being a 25-06 or something like that. Could that bee a .338 in the background?

And the straight walled? Is the middle one a .44Mag but it looks tiny compared to the others...?

So come on: set me straight on what these are....

Hmmm....not going to be of much help at all.

I did try to use my computer-fu to get a larger version of the picture but all I got was blur, major blur.

I did find out if you go to Amazon THEY will give you an enlarged version of the cover if you mouse over it but that didn't increase my firearms knowledge one little bit so still can't help you out.

I might go out on a limb and guess the big fat cartridge with the sharp shoulder is one of the new 'short magnum' rounds but I wouldn't put money on it.

I looked at the cover of mine last night, here are a few guesses:

The short bottleneck with the blue tip is the 5.7 x whatever used in the FN FiveseveN.

The stubby one to the right of that is a .223 WSSM.

The shortest pistol round in the middle is a .380 ACP.

The bigger straight-walled one standing up is a .454 Cassul or .500 Mag.

I think the pistol round laying down on the right is a .50 AE.

The one laying down on the far right might be a .45 Colt because it looks like it has a rim.

I think you are right about the red-tipped bottleneck one being a 25-06.

The tall ones standing in the back could be a .308 and one of those elephant gun things like a Rigby.

Well, let's try some guesses then. The tallest has to be the .460 Wby, while a .30-06 to the left of the .460. To the right of the .460, I'll opt for a .45-70. The short mag next to the '06 seems to be a 7mm or .270, I'll try for 7mm Rem SA Ultra Mag, although the case seems wider. The red tipped rifle cartridge lying down, a .260 Rem or .25-06. For the handgun cartridge in front of the .460, a .44 Special.

Late addition:
For the blue tipped cartridge, I'll try for the 6.8mm Rem SPC.

OK!!

That's more like it! Although, there are a few areas of disagreement. I know, I know.... disgreement on TFL... who'd have thought it? :D

I think we can agree that weird, stocky one is indeed the WSSM, and the tall on is a Weatherby Magnum.

I'm not sure I see any auto pistol rounds, though. Wouldn't all the auto pistol rounds have rimless cases, as opposed to rimmed?

I'd also say the difference in diameter between the the two standing straight-walled cases is too great to to be the difference between .45 and .429, no?

The lying down HP could be .45Colt as it has that tiny rim that I often hear criticism about.

Anyway, keep them coming! I like the reasoning.

Anyone else out there with the Lyman 49th who dares to give their input to the identities of the cartridges on the cover? Should be getting more mileage from this fun thread. No set rules but enter two choices if you would like for each cartridge. Other than a Lyman employee, there will probably not be a winner to the contest. But perhaps a majority of opinions can be established for some of the cartridges. But if there are no additional entries, I will just consider myself to be the winner.

I guess I'm the undisputed winner of the "Identify Those Cartridges" contest. See post #8 for explanation of the honest judging results. And congratulations to Pond, Dale and Economist who all closely tied for runner-up. But wait, there's still time to get in your own entry! Don't be left out.

Sorry, but had to pull the image. Please read board policy on posting copyrighted material.

The Big round to the rear is definitely a 460 WM. It's the only .45 with a shoulder that shape. The one to its immediate left is a 308 Win. You can tell by the overall length being just under that of the 460 case, which is 2.9-something maximum, while the 308 COL is 2.810 maximum. The one to its right has a case length just below the shoulder of the 308, so it's a 454 Casull. I'll leave you to looking at the other drawings in the Lyman book for comparisons.

No, no...

Apologies from me: my mistake.

Anyway, at the risk of ruining Condor Bravo's day, based on those further clues from Unclenick, I'm going to go for 22 PPC for the short fat one and 5.7 x 28 FN for the blue-tip as suggested earlier.

Re: post #10

Yes I had considered the cartridge to the right of the .460 to possibly be the .454 Casull (in addition to the .45-70 that I selected), but was allowing only one choice with that entry.

I'm getting tempted by S&W 500 for that tall one on the right as it appears to be wider than the .45 cal .460 in the middle.

For the silver-tip rifle cartridge on the left, I'm leaning .338 purely because of the bullet diameter compare to the .308 and .460.

The short straight-wall in the foreground still has me stumped. It appears to be about .40-.44 cal, but only about 1" OAL, compared to the .308 or .22 PPC.

I'm also still a bit lost on the two straight-walls on the right....

The pistol cartridges are all rimmed or semi rimmed and two have roll crimps for revolvers. Guessing 44 Special (shorter case, prominent rim), 38 S&W, and not sure on the front one. Some sort of revolver cartridge though.
