MARCHER’S GUIDE FOR WASHINGTON, DC RALLY
This is to provide our attendees with guidelines we
hope will help to make our day a success.
FIRST, the most important thing to remember: No
handgun can be legally possessed in Washington DC
unless it is registered, and the last registrations
were permitted in 1977. Therefore, it is unlawful to
possess, acquire, or bring into DC any handgun which
was not registered as of Feb. 5, 1977. (From NRA-ILA -
please see http://www.nraila.org./research/19990716-BillofRightsCivilRights-008.html
for more information on DC's gun laws.) In other
words, folks, leave the guns home or in a safe place,
but do not bring them into the DC city limits. Also,
we ask that you not bring toy guns, replicas,
ammunition, air guns - you get the picture. The simple
fact that we are a "pro-gun" march means that we will
be watched extra carefully, and there will be those
looking to exploit any "mistakes" we make. And please
- no empty holsters.
SECOND, the most basic items you'll need are:
1. A blanket, beach towel or a folding chair to sit on
2. Sunscreen, hats, some form of shade
3. Foul weather gear - rain is always a possibility
4. Comfortable shoes
5. Water
Special Note: We will have a limited number of extra
chairs available, however, we cannot provide for
everyone. Those with physical disability will receive
priority.
FIRST AID: There will be an area designated for first
aid needs and medical emergencies.
WEATHER: For May, average high temps run near 80, lows
near 50. Washington DC forecasts are available from
any number of online weather web sites.
BEHAVIOR: Conduct yourself as you would if you were a
guest in someone's home. Please don't try to pick
fights or be confrontational. Remember our purpose in
being here - to give the public a chance to see that
we gun owners are not the stereotypical buffoons the
media has made us out to be. Let's show everybody what
a great bunch we really are.
DRESS RECOMMENDATION:We are asking everyone to dress
neatly but comfortably, like you would to attend a
casual restaurant. Please, no camouflage, gas masks -
and please, NO EMPTY HOLSTERS.
FOOD AND DRINK: Please bring your own food and drink,
we will not be permitted to sell any. There will be
vendors in the park area, but whatever they have will
probably be pretty expensive. It's best to come
prepared for a long day with some food you're familiar
with.
TRANSPORTATION: Buses will be able to drop passengers
anywhere along the Mall area, some will park at RFK
Stadium first, and from there you'll have to take the
Metro, which will bring you within 5-6 blocks of the
Monument.
The two closest drop-off points will be:
Farragut West http://www.wmata.com./USINGMET/Stations/farragutwest_st.htm
Smithsonian http://www.wmata.com./USINGMET/Stations/smithsonian_st.htm
More information on the DC Metro system is available
at http://www.wmata.com
If you'll be staying at a hotel outside of DC, please
call your hotel for information on the nearest public
transportation available. Most of the hotels on our
list are within a mile or two of the march site, and
you may be able to get a taxi. Parking a car is not
easy in the area surrounding the Mall, but if you can
make it in before 8 AM you'll probably have a better
opportunity. Parking may be available near the office
buildings on C, D and E Streets, northeast of the
Monument area. If you park your car, please don't
leave any valuables visible. You may also choose to
park your car at any of the surrounding Metro
stations. Since we kick off an hour ahead of the MMM,
you'll have a better chance at getting parking than
they will.
This map, http://www.mata.com/USINGMET/systemmap.htm
has a listing of all the stations, including the ones
that have available parking.
SCHEDULE: CAPITOL TOUR: Our marchers will be able to
take a free tour of the Capitol Building and its
grounds at the conclusion of the march, which should
be around 4 PM. The Capitol closes at 6 PM.
SIGNS AND POSTERS: We will have some sign-making
materials at the rally site, but you're welcome to
make your own ahead of time. If you're going to be
making your own, please follow these guidelines.
Sign Suggestions:
1. Please keep slogans on messages pro-RKBA,
pro-self-defense, pro-freedom
2. No threats, profanity or racist language
Themes for Signs: Because messages "stick" better if
they are repeated and amplified upon, we would like
most signs to relate to the three main themes of the
march, which are:
-Gun control increases violent crime
-Self-defense, a basic human right
-Enforce existing laws against violent crime
However, if you feel strongly about a theme not
included above, you are still welcome to bring a sign
expressing it, provided it complies with the "Rules"
listed above. Note that these are themes, not the
slogans themselves. We have a long list of slogan
suggestions that we'll be sending separate from this
guide.
Signs can be carried directly in your hands or held up
overhead by attaching to a long cardboard tube or
narrow stick. Use thick cardboard or some other rigid
material.
Recommended minimum size - 3ft. x 4 ft., but the
bigger the better.
Recommended minimum lettering size - 6 in. tall, and
minimum letter line width should be 1 inch. Again,
bigger is better.
Colors: Black lettering/white sign has the best visual
impact. Black lettering/yellow sign is good for a
"warning" type of message. Try to avoid red or
fluorescent backgrounds; any lettering gets lost on
camera. If you're using a color scheme other than
black on white, use high contrast colors - don't let
letters fade into background. A good rule of thumb is
light background/dark lettering.
Message Length: Keep your messages short and punchy!
Eight words is usually too many. Your message needs to
be recognized with one glance, which is all a brief
video clip or two on the news will offer.
CLEAN UP: Let's leave the grounds as clean as we found
them. Trash cans will be placed throughout the
grounds, but please bring a few household trash bags
to put your own garbage in; these can be deposited in
the trash cans at the end of the day. If you smoke,
have a can to put your butts in so you don't leave
them all over the grass.
TOILET FACILITIES: Porta-potties will be available,
including one that is handicapped-accessible. Have
something available to clean your hands, there is no
running water.
DISRUPTERS: Although we'll be at the other end of the
Mall from the MMM, there may be some hecklers or
people otherwise looking to cause trouble. We will
have a security team on hand to make sure things go
smoothly, working with local police. If someone yells
at you or verbally hassles you, the best course of
action is to ignore it. Nothing can be done to prevent
someone from speaking his or her mind. "Terroristic
Threats" will not be tolerated, however, and should a
person fail to remain within the bounds of lawful
speech/behavior, they will be detained by Security.
While people may be able to get away with calling you
names, they can't get away with touching you.
Assault/battery is defined as "any unwelcome touching
of any part of the body, with the intent to cause harm
to another or for gratification of one's desires" and
is either a crime and/or actionable under civil law.
MEDIA: Please keep in mind that this event will
attract all types of media. Reporters and camera crews
will be trying to get comments from our participants,
and some of them may not be sympathetic to the cause.
Remember, they are reporters doing a job, and that job
is to get a story. Keep in mind that anything you say
has the potential to end up on national television and
be representative of us as a whole - be polite and
civil at the very least.
