SANTA ANA -- Police arrested a 22-year-old warehouse worker Thursday who they say is the serial rapist behind a 10-week spree of armed sexual assaults against eight women that left hundreds of other northwest Santa Ana residents on edge.

Eduardo Alberto Guzman was taken into custody about 6:30 a.m. at 17th and Bristol streets as he was leaving for work. He lived with his girlfriend and their 2-year- old son in the 2400 block of N. Hesperian Street, less than two miles from the site of the most recent attack.

During a search of his single-story home, officers found an assortment of knives, purses and other stolen property linking Guzman to as many as 20 crimes, including the rapes, police said.

"One hundred percent confirmed," Police Chief Paul Walters said. "He's the one. There's no doubt."

Guzman, in an interview with KMEX-TV, maintained his innocence, saying, "I am not capable of doing such a thing.''

He was arrested driving a white, 1980s-model Olds mobile sedan similar to a vehicle seen by witnesses following several attacks. Detectives tracked Guzman using property stolen from the victims, police said.

During interviews with investigators, Guzman provided details that only the rapist would know, police said.

In all, four women were raped and four others nearly raped at gated apartment complexes since July 14.

Most attacks occurred near 17th Street, between Fairview Street and the Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway.

Investigators said Guzman intimidated women with a knife.

On Monday, the suspect was nearly captured after residents of an apartment complex walked into a laundry room, foiling the rape attempt.

Sounds to me like they have this guy dead to rights, with him being in possession of purses stolen from the victims, so I hope they throw the book at him. To bring this back on TFL topics, it is a shame that these women live in a state that will not allow them the means to defend themselves. If the first lady had put a couple of hollow points in this clown, the rest need not have suffered.
