It appears that San Francisco views Memorial Day, and the veterans that the day is supposed to remember and honor, with, if not benign indifference, then outright contempt.
The "City" has contributed a grand total of $1,000 for the annual Memorial Day parade in the presidio.
Quote from the online article:
-----
Wallace Levin, a 70-year-old Korean War veteran,
said yesterday that Monday's commemoration will
go on as planned, but he warned that organizers are
fed up because city officials give them just $1,000
to pay for the programs, flowers and other items
necessary to stage the event every year.
``For a city that has a $4 billion budget and a $113
million surplus, we get a lousy $1,000,'' said Levin.
``If this thing continues, if they don't give us money
and support, I'm going to recommend we do away
with the event.''
The money comes from the city's Hotel Tax Fund
and is paid out by the Grants for the Arts Program.
Last year, the program awarded $10.8 million to
213 arts and cultural groups -- including $7,000 to
put on the Aloha Festival, $9,000 for the Folsom
Street Fair, $12,000 for Samoan Flag Day and
$75,000 for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender
Pride Celebration.
Veterans are outraged that the $1,000 is by far the
smallest grant that the program hands out -- every
other group gets at least $5,000.

I know, I know... generally I wouldn't even post this, but good Lord!
