Same state personal sale

I ran across this today: http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#b17 and want to ensure I'm reading this correctly. It states that as an individual, I can sell one of my guns to a friend or other individual without requiring an FFL or requiring FFL interaction at all. Furthermore, I don't even need to contact the DOJ or other agency. Is this right?

That's a good assumption in the free states of the United States of America. I'd be astonished if that's the case in Kalifornia.

Sig,

You live in California, so that means you have to go via Cali law. And IIRC, you have to go through an FFL even with a personal transaction.

Now, in most of the other states, then yes.

Just don't forget, thats only the case where both the buyer and the seller are residents of the same state. If your friend resides in a different state, that does not apply. And as mentioned above, even if both parties reside in the same state, if the state law requires the transaction go through an FFL, then you still have to comply with the state law.

Zekewolf: But we would not be seen as responsible gun owners if we didn't. Your attitude is exactly the reason why the antis think that they need more gun control. :(

I sold a Glock to an acquaintance in the parking lot of my old apartment building here in Texas off the tailgate of my pickup. Perfectly legal here, though.

As others have said, you must consult your state laws first. Here in Massachusetts, private firearms sales between individuals are allowed to a maximum of four a year, provided the state registration form is completed and mailed.
