Wouldn't it be unsafe to fire a harmonica rifle offhand?

I'd imagine with ones support arm in front of the magazine, if there was a chain fire it could be a horrific wound.

Seems though off a bench, with the hands/arms WELL AWAY from the front of the magazine, it could be enjoyable to shoot.

I doubt it would be a horrific wound but it would hurt. The flash wouldn't feel good either. The best place for your hand would be under the bottom of the magazine.
 
Looks at the barrels on them. It would be awkward to hold in that manner.

No, these guns are not safe by today's standards, unless fired off a bench by a well experienced shooter who knows the risks.
