I got rid of the 3-9X x40 Bushnell with the Micro thin crosshairs that came with the rifle. I retrofitted the 710 .30-06 with a Bushnell Banner 4X32 with the low light feature for $70.00 using the same rings that came with the gun.
The bolt action is still bad but I have found that it is smoothing up a bit and works better when cycled at a moderate rate versus trying to win a race with it. The trigger has always been surprisingly good.
The new scope has solved the accuracy issues. At the local range on the 25 yard rifle range, I am making one big hole dead center in the Bull's eye. This puts me 2-3" high at 100 yards and dead on somewhere around 200 yards with a remington core lokt 150 grain Walmart Especial.
The circle X reticle combined with the incredibly fast target acquisition makes this the perfect brush rifle. By sighting in like I do, I am good to go on my tree stands at the 40 to 80 yard ranges and I have the needed distance if I see one slipping through the timber at 150 yards or so while walking to and fro the stand.
If you have a 710, lose the factory scope and you will be much happier. If you don't have one and want a budget hunting rifle, get a Savage Package, Winchester Package or a NEF Handi Rifle.
Scopewise, the Bushnell Dusk to Dawn Banner is impressive for the money and it comes with a lifetime warranty. It really gathers light well, the circle X reticle is great for thick cover and it is so easy to acquire the target. If you have a high dollar weapon, I would go for the Leupold, Schmidt and Bender, Zeiss or a comporable make but for the 710 or a rifle in its class, a Korean-made Bushnell will suffice.
